Job summary

Department of Justice and Community Safety VIC in Parkville, VIC, seeks a Youth Justice Worker (Night Shift) to supervise and support young people on remand or in custody. You will engage at night, using calm, firm boundaries and compassionate communication.

Our program includes 8 weeks of paid training, generous penalty rates, five weeks of annual leave, and up to $10,000 relocation support for eligible moves across Cherry Creek, Parkville and Malmsbury.

Qualifications

  • Australian citizen, permanent resident, or NZ citizen with valid work rights.
  • Current First Aid Certification (HLTAID011).
  • Current CPR Certification.
  • Working with Children Check (Employee) valid.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and support young people overnight on remand or custody.
  • Redirect anti-social behaviour and monitor behaviour.
  • Monitor CCTV, complete compliance reporting, and respond to alarms.
  • Respond to incidents as they occur.
  • Facilitate access to health, mental health, education, and disability services.

  • Earn up to $99,645 per year, on a base of $62,104 (including standard penalty rates).

Youth justice workers are based across our three precincts of Cherry Creek, Parkville and Malmsbury.

The role of a youth justice worker

Youth justice workers (Nights) are thefrontline staffwhosupervise and support young people overnight who are on remand or serving a sentence in custody.

This is not a security job with long stretches of downtime. You will speak directly to young people throughout the night, typically through their intercom. When they feel vulnerable, they may reach out. Some conversations will beraw and personal. You will listen with care and compassion while keeping firm boundaries.

You will also:

  • redirect anti-social and challenging behaviour
  • monitorCCTV,complete compliance reporting andrespond to any alarms
  • respond to incidentsas they occur
  • facilitate supportfrom other services, including health and mental health providers, educators and disability organisations.

To be considered for a youth justice worker role you must be either:

  • an Australian citizen – a birth certificate, citizenship certificate or current passport is required as proof of eligibility
  • a permanent resident of Australia
  • a New Zealand citizen who has entered Australia on a valid passport, or eligible to work in Australia for a period of more than six months.

Prior to starting work, all successful candidates must independently obtain:

  • Current First Aid Certification (HLTAID011)
  • Current CPR Certification
  • A valid Working with Children Check (Employee)

Please note, all certificates must be valid for at least three months from employment start date.

A driver's licence is desirable but not mandatory.
