Job summary

The University of Queensland (UQ) is seeking a coordinated Teaching Laboratory and operational support specialist to join the VETS Clinical Studies Centre. You will coordinate daily teaching lab operations, manage inventory, and provide technical and instructional support for undergraduate practical teaching, workshops and seminars.

Reporting to the Centre Manager and working with veterinary and animal care professionals, you will contribute to high-quality animal care and a positive student

Qualifications

• Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing and current driver licence.
• Experience with animal husbandry, handling and care of dogs, cats, birds, horses, pigs and sheep.
• Experience in laboratory teaching/technical environments and with cadavers.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate the daily operation of the Teaching Laboratory, class preparation, inventory and stock rotation.
• Provide professional medical, surgical and technical support, including anaesthesia and post-operative monitoring.
• Assist with preparing animals, equipment and facilities for teaching classes and practical surgery.
• Support practical teaching and continuing education activities with academic staff and students.
• Contribute to Centre operations through record keeping, customer service and administrative support.

• Base salary will be in the range $79,096 to $83,863 + 17% super (HEW Level 4).

Join the purposeful and collaborative UQ VETS Clinical Studies Centre, where you will help coordinate the Teaching Laboratory and provide skilled operational, technical and instructional support for undergraduate practical teaching, continuing education workshops and seminars. Reporting to the Clinical Studies Centre Manager and working alongside a team of veterinary, technical and animal care professionals, you will contribute to high-quality animal care, an exceptional student experience and the development of the next generation of veterinary professionals.

Key responsibilities will include, but not limited to:

• Coordinate the daily operation of the Teaching Laboratory, class preparation, inventory management, stock rotation, ordering and routine maintenance.
• Provide professional medical, surgical and technical support, including animal handling and husbandry, anaesthesia and post-operative monitoring, basic laboratory procedures, diagnostic clinical pathology and assistance with specialised imaging procedures.
• Support practical teaching and continuing education activities by working with academic staff, assisting students and preparing animals, equipment and facilities for teaching classes and practical surgery.
• Assist with clipping and sorting out cadavers for practicals.
• Contribute to responsive and efficient Centre operations through equipment care, record keeping, customer service, administrative support and the Veterinary School Animal Adoption Program.

The Centre includes a 16-table surgical teaching facility and is also used for veterinary continuing education events. The Clinical Studies Centre is also home to the School’s Pets-for-Life Adoption Program.

You will bring practical veterinary nursing or technical experience, sound judgement and a genuine commitment to animal welfare and student learning. You will have:

• Qualifications and training equivalent to a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, or an equivalent combination of relevant education, training and experience, together with a current open driver licence.
• Knowledge and experience in low-stress animal husbandry, handling, restraint and care, particularly involving dogs, cats, birds, horses, pigs and sheep.
• Experience working with animals in a laboratory, teaching, technical or clinical environment, including the handling of cadavers and assisting with animal euthanasia.
• Knowledge and experience in companion animal behaviour, medical and surgical nursing, and the monitoring of anaesthesia, analgesia and post-operative recovery.
• Knowledge of the relevant codes, legislation and ethical requirements governing the use of animals in research and teaching, together with a strong commitment to animal welfare.
• Strong organisational and record-keeping skills, with the ability to prioritise competing demands, work independently, use initiative and contribute to improved work practices.
• Effective interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to build cooperative relationships with veterinary professionals, academic staff, students, animal attendants, clients and other colleagues.
• Digital capability across word processing, databases, spreadsheets, email and practice management software, together with a commitment to UQ’s values of openness, respect and integrity.
