Job summary

Queensland Veterinary Specialists (QVS) is seeking a part-time veterinary nurse to join the Medicine team. The role covers patient workups, triage and ICU support across our Stafford, North Lakes and Sunshine Coast hospitals.

You’ll work with surgery, critical care, anaesthesia, oncology and emergency teams, while benefitting from ongoing internal and external training and a supportive network of nurses and technicians.

Qualifications

• Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing or Bachelor of Veterinary Technology.
• Minimum two years of post-qualification nursing experience in vet care.
• Demonstrated ability to monitor anaesthesia and support surgical teams.

Responsibilities

• Assist Specialists during examinations and treatments.
• Administer medications and provide follow-up care.
• Learn and assist with safe chemotherapy handling for oncology patients.
• Monitor anaesthesia during procedures and collect samples for tests.
• Participate in weekend rotation and after-hours on-call duties once trained.

About the Role

This is a varied, hands-on role where you'll be involved in everything from patient workups and procedures to triage and ICU support.
You'll work closely with our surgery, critical care, anaesthesia, oncology and emergency departments, in a hospital equipped with advanced diagnostic tools including radiography, ultrasound, CT, MRI, endoscopy and in-house laboratory facilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist our Specialists during examinations and treatments, ensuring a smooth and supportive experience for every patient.
• Administer medications, including injections, as prescribed, and provide follow-up care after consultations.
• Learn safe chemotherapy handling and administration techniques while providing exceptional care to our oncology patients.
• Monitor anaesthesia under veterinary supervision for procedures such as endoscopy, CT and MRI.
• Collect blood samples, perform laboratory tests and take diagnostic radiographs.
• PT position (30 hours per week) with availability Monday to Friday participating on a weekend rotation (on call responsibilities once trained)

Requirements

• Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing or a Bachelor of Veterinary Technology.
• At least two years' post-qualification experience in veterinary nursing. General practice nurses are welcome to apply, as our team is passionate about teaching.
• Confidence in anaesthesia monitoring. Our specialist anaesthesia team and experienced nurses and technicians will support you as you step into specialist nursing.
• A friendly, adaptable nature, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• A proven ability to consistently deliver high-quality patient care, even under pressure.

Desirable

• Diploma of Veterinary Nursing (Emergency and Critical Care) or similar.
• Experience in an emergency or specialist veterinary hospital (desirable but not essential).
