The Team

The Trading Operations team within the Trading & Transition business unit is responsible for managing, enhancing, and extending EnergyAustralia's electricity and gas wholesale market analyses and modelling capabilities to ensure that planning, trading, strategy, and policy decisions are informed by an in depth understanding of and insight into market drivers and directions.

About the role

Embedded within the Trading Operations team, you would be part of the cross-functional agile team driving delivery of key analytical initiatives that substantially increase the value from EA's wholesale markets portfolio.

These initiatives could include focusing on :

  • Operational or portfolio optimisation, forecasting, decision analysis.
  • Driving the adoption of relevant advanced analytics technologies within Trading, such as machine learning, AI, distributed computing.
  • Enhancing our auto-bidder for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to achieve improved outcomes or new features.
  • Extending our optimised auto-bidding capability to pumped hydro and / or thermal assets.
  • Partnering with our Physical Markets trading team to search for optimisation opportunities such as how we best bid into a peaking electricity market.
  • Support EA's Specialised Businesses area in delivering products that add value to both the customer and the wholesale market portfolio.

The role requires the intersection of deep and highly specialised commercial and market knowledge with substantial experience in the application of advanced analytics techniques in production settings.

What are we ideally seeking?
  • Tertiary qualifications in a quantitative discipline – Mathematics, Engineering, Operations Research, Data Science
  • Postgraduate qualifications or Masters degree in relevant field is highly desirable.
  • Experience in a wholesale energy trading environment highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading the delivery of production advanced analytics tools.
  • Expert ability to get to the essence of data considering the business context, and distil key problem features into a transparent, accurate and useful model.
  • Experience in the development of analytical software through hands on delivery of commercial grade systems
  • Highly developed and deep commercial understanding of the NEM and other Australian energy markets, including specialised trading instruments including derivative products and energy and FCAS spot markets.
