Job summary

Australian Securities Exchange is seeking a test automation engineer to join the Sydney-based test team. You will develop and maintain automated tests, support CI/CD pipelines, and provide reliable release evidence for ASX Trade and related market platforms.

Qualifications

Your Team

As a member of the ASX test team, you will work closely with Developers, Support Analysts, Business Analysts, Test Engineers, Automation Engineers, Infrastructure Engineers, External Vendors and Business Stakeholders to develop and maintain automated test solutions, improve technical testability, strengthen CI/CD execution, investigate failures and provide reliable release evidence for ASX Trade and related market platforms.

Your responsibilities

• Develop, maintain and improve automated tests, reusable components, utilities and execution assets.
• Support automated test execution within Git, GitLab CI/CD or equivalent delivery pipelines.
• Create and execute automated API, integration, regression, end-to-end and release verification tests for ASX Trade and related market platform changes.
• Apply sound programming, scripting and automation design practices to produce maintainable, well-documented and reusable test assets.
• Contribute to shift-left testing by reviewing requirements, acceptance criteria and technical designs for testability, traditional test coverage, automation opportunities and risk coverage.
• Validate order flow, market data, interface behaviour and integration outcomes across applicable protocols such as FIX, ITCH, OUCH, APIs, messages and data feeds.
• Prepare test data, check environment dependencies and support execution readiness across Linux/Unix and integrated test environments.
• Investigate automation failures, defects, environment issues and data discrepancies using logs, pipeline output, database queries, messages and technical evidence.
• Document results, prepare release evidence and support sign-off activities so releases can be assessed safely for production readiness.
• Log, investigate and report defects with clear evidence, impact, severity, reproducibility details and technical analysis.
• Contribute to QE&T Community of Practice standards, automation patterns, reusable components and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Use employer-approved AI tools responsibly to improve productivity, technical analysis and test engineering outcomes.
• Contribute across different test phases and assist other team members where required.

Your experience and qualifications

• 3-6 years' experience in test automation, quality engineering or technical testing within medium to large technology environments.
• Solid hands-on Java automation experience, with the ability to develop and maintain automated tests, reusable components and framework assets.
• Working knowledge of Python and the ability to support or extend Python-based automation assets where required.
• Good understanding of object-oriented programming, clean coding practices and maintainable automation design.
• Hands-on API, integration and backend testing experience using tools such as Postman, SoapUI, REST libraries or equivalent frameworks.
• Experience with Cucumber, Gherkin or behaviour-driven test automation approaches.
• Hands-on experience using CI/CD pipelines and investigating failed automated test executions using Git, GitLab CI/CD or equivalent tooling.
• Good SQL capability for backend validation, reconciliation and analysis of test results or data sets.
• Good Linux/Unix command-line capability and technical troubleshooting skills.
• Experience with Jira and Confluence for test management, defect management, traceability and technical documentation.
• Ability to analyse business and technical requirements and identify test conditions, automation candidates, data needs and quality risks.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical issues to engineering and business stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Experience in financial markets, exchanges, electronic trading or market infrastructure.
• Knowledge of FIX, ITCH, OUCH or related market protocols.
• Experience with UI automation tools such as Selenium or Playwright.
• Experience with containers, Kubernetes or cloud-native test execution environments.
• Experience with performance, resilience, failover or operational readiness testing tools such as JMeter or Gatling.
• Experience with observability, monitoring or log-analysis tools used for test investigation.
• Exposure to service virtualisation, API mocking or test data automation.
• Experience using AI responsibly in test engineering or automation productivity.
