Job description

New Full-Stack JS Technical Lead position – Sydney – 2 days per week in Surry Hills – Node/TS/React focus. $170k-$180k + super

I’ve taken on a new role for a global HR-tech SAAS business based in Surry Hills who have recently secured very strong financial backing and are looking to take their business global. Right now, their customer base is solely in Aus, but with a recent merge and investment, they’re at the early stages of a big 3 year growth plan.

This software company is relatively small right now and has just 2 engineers in Sydney, plus a small off-shore team.

The business is about 20 people in Sydney, with 100,000 active users across 25 key customers (blue + white collar businesses across Aus).

We’re looking for a strong technical lead to come in and really own the tech stack and codebase, build rapport across the business, set technical direction and work on future tech strategy.

Stack: Nodejs, TS, vanilla JS for front-end (a move to React is on the cards), AWS, microservices, CICD, websockets (considering upgrades there) and their own custom JS framework for their mobile app.

Likely 80% cutting code to begin with and that’ll likely change over time. The idea is to hire a few devs in Sydney over the next 18 months.

The business will be hiring a new CTO (full hands off) this year also, for you to work alongside.

The day to day:

Focusing on revamping their front-end to React
Cutting code in JS - nodejs, TS, some infra work
Software architecture, future roadmap planning with the CEO
Working alongside the lead devops engineer and lead QA
Supporting the team in Manila where needed (minimal)
Reviewing and thinking about all technical upgrades
Completing major in-progress projects and planning new initiatives
Work with the leadership team on the future vision of the tech strategy

To summarise, we’re looking for someone with (at a guess) 10 years+ commercial experience in software engineering and is now at the point in their career where they want to step up into a true leadership role and start to build a small team of 4-5 people around them.

It will always be a hands-on technical role but over time (as the company scales) your day to day could move away from coding to more overseeing the tech direction.
