MetLife Australia is seeking a Technical Business Analyst to connect business, data and technology teams for data platforms, analytics, and reporting solutions. You will translate needs into testable requirements, manage backlogs and ensure traceability from business asks to delivered outcomes in a regulated environment.

You will work with architecture, engineering and governance teams to support data flows, quality, metadata and accessibility, while ensuring readiness for production and change

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience in Business Analysis, Information Systems, Data or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience as a Technical Business Analyst supporting data, analytics, reporting or financial services tech.
  • Strong SQL knowledge and data analysis capability for requirements validation and data product delivery.
  • Experience eliciting, documenting and managing business, functional, non-functional and data requirements in Agile and waterfall environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality user stories, acceptance criteria and requirements documentation.
  • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders, engineers, testers and product teams to manage scope, risks and delivery trade-offs.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with business product owners, Data & Analytics leaders, architects and engineers to understand needs, priorities and success measures.
  • Lead requirements elicitation for data, analytics, reporting and platform initiatives to advance data foundations.
  • Translate business and technical needs into clear user stories, acceptance criteria, data mappings and definitions of done.
  • Facilitate workshops and interviews to identify requirements and dependencies.
  • Manage and prioritise backlogs, maintaining traceability between outcomes, requirements and delivered functionality.
  • Assess impact of changes on data products, considering quality, metadata, lineage and access.
  • Support UAT planning, execution, defect resolution and acceptance evidence.
  • Maintain current, version-controlled documentation across systems and repositories.
  • Triages business queries and coordinates resolution across teams and partners.
  • Support production readiness with operational docs and communication plans.
  • Identify risks, data issues and dependencies, providing options and next steps.
  • Contribute to data governance, privacy, security and regulatory compliance initiatives.
  • Leverage AI tools to improve analysis, documentation and knowledge management.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce manual effort and improve delivery with templates and reusable artefacts.

Job description

The Technical Business Analyst is 12-month contract responsiblefor connecting business, data and technology teams to support the delivery of data platforms, data products and reporting solutions across MetLife Australia’s Data & Analytics function.

Guided by our purpose, always with you, building a more confident future, and our New Frontier strategy focused on stronger growth, attractive returns and all-weather performance, this role will contribute to advancing MetLife Australia’s Data Foundations and enabling us to become a more digital, AI-enabled and data-driven insurer.

You will translate stakeholder needs into clear and testable requirements, manage delivery backlogs and maintain strong traceability from business needs through to delivered outcomes. Working closely with architecture, engineering, testing, product and business teams, you will support reliable data flows, data quality, reporting, user acceptance testing and change readiness in a regulated financial services environment.

This role is based in Sydney and offers flexible working arrangements, with an expectation of working in the office at least two days per week and as required based on business needs. It reports to the Enterprise Data Architect and has no direct reports.

Key Responsibilities
  • Partner with business product owners, Data & Analytics leaders, architects, engineers, testing teams and business stakeholders to understand business needs, delivery priorities, data impacts and success measures.
  • Lead and support requirements elicitation for strategic data, analytics, reporting and platform initiatives that advance MetLife Australia’s Data Foundations and broader digital objectives.
  • Translate business and technical needs into clear user stories, use cases, functional and non-functional requirements, process maps, data mapping artefacts, acceptance criteria and definitions of ready and done.
  • Facilitate workshops, interviews and documentation reviews to identify stated and unstated requirements, business processes, data impacts, reporting needs, dependencies and acceptance criteria.
  • Manage and prioritise delivery backlogs, maintaining traceability between business outcomes, requirements, user stories, testing evidence and delivered functionality.
  • Assess the impact of changes on data and reporting products, considering downstream dependencies, data quality, metadata, lineage and access requirements.
  • Partner with engineering, architecture, quality assurance and business stakeholders to define user acceptance testing requirements and support UAT planning, execution, defect resolution, retesting and acceptance.
  • Maintain accurate, current and version-controlled requirements, process, technical and data product documentation across agreed systems and repositories.
  • Support production data flows, reporting products and platform processes by triaging business queries, clarifying requirements, raising defects and coordinating resolution across internal teams, vendors and technology partners.
  • Support production readiness by ensuring operational documentation, support procedures, known issues, service impacts and business communications are prepared before implementation.
  • Identify and elevate delivery risks, data risks, control gaps, defects, dependencies and unresolved decisions, providing clear options and recommended next steps.
  • Contribute to data governance, data quality, metadata, privacy, information security and risk initiatives, ensuring delivery artefacts support auditability, traceability and regulatory compliance.
  • Use approved AI and automation tools, including Microsoft Copilot where appropriate, to improve the efficiency and quality of requirements analysis, documentation, meeting summaries, process mapping and knowledge management.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce manual effort and strengthen delivery quality through automation, reusable artefacts, templates and improved ways of working.
  • Model responsible AI use by maintaining transparency, appropriate data handling, human oversight and alignment with organisational AI, data and security policies.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience in Business Analysis, Information Systems, Data, Technology, Computer Science, Commerce, Finance or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience as a Technical Business Analyst, ideally supporting data, analytics, reporting, technology platforms or financial services technology.
  • Strong understanding of data, reporting, analytics and business intelligence concepts.
  • Experience eliciting, documenting and managing business, functional, non-functional and data requirements across Agile and waterfall delivery environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality user stories, acceptance criteria, process maps, data mapping artefacts, requirements traceability matrices and delivery documentation.
  • Strong SQL knowledge and data analysis capability to support requirements validation, issue investigation and the delivery of data and reporting products.
  • Strong understanding of data modelling concepts, including dimensional modelling, star schemas, source data, curated datasets and reporting products.
  • Experience supporting data platforms, data warehouses, reporting, analytics or dashboard delivery.
  • Experience supporting UAT planning and execution, including test scenarios, test data requirements, defect triage, retesting and acceptance evidence.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with business stakeholders, product owners, data engineers, architects, testers and operational teams to manage scope, dependencies, risks, issues and delivery trade-offs.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement, workshop facilitation, written communication and expectation management skills.
  • Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving and attention to detail, with the ability to work through ambiguity and uncover unstated requirements.
  • Proficiency in using digital and AI-enabled productivity tools to support analysis, documentation, collaboration and workplace efficiency, with a commitment to responsible and ethical use.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Relevant certification or professional training in business analysis, Agile delivery, product ownership, data analysis, project delivery or a related discipline.
  • Experience working with Snowflake, Tableau, Azure DevOps or comparable data, reporting and delivery tools.
  • Experience supporting business impact assessments, change communications, training documentation, operational handovers and post-implementation reviews.
  • Understanding of data governance, privacy, information security, data risk and auditability requirements in a regulated environment.
  • Experience in life insurance, banking, wealth, superannuation or broader financial services.
  • Experience working with external delivery vendors, platform partners or implementation partners.
