Job description

About the role

Join Saab Australia as a Systems Engineer – Land Capability.

Shape the Future of Land Capability.

We are seeking an experienced System Engineer – Land Systems to support the Program Engineering Lead in establishing and managing configuration baselines and delivering systems engineering and Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) outcomes across a complex Land Capability program.

This role sits at the intersection of systems engineering, supportability and sustainment, ensuring operational, maintenance and lifecycle requirements are built into the system from integration through to deployment and in-service support.

We work in a fast-paced, demanding, challenging as well as time sensitive environment; we’re diverse, global, resilient, adaptable and agile, therefore the ability to solve problems is critical.

Along with satisfaction & rewards that comes with working for a global defence company, you can expect a generous salary, a range of outstanding benefits & an inclusive working environment.

The Role

You will take ownership of assigned systems and technical work packages, working across the systems engineering lifecycle while supporting the development of ILS and sustainment engineering activities.

Key responsibilities
  • Apply sound systems engineering principles across the entire system engineering lifecycle including conception, defining the requirements, design, realisation, integration, verification, acceptance and support.
  • Identify, develop, and manage requirements for Land Capability systems, sub-systems and components, ensuring they are clear, traceable, testable and fit for purpose.
  • Develop and maintain system and subsystem architecture, design artefacts, interfaces and technical documentation.
  • Prepare technical material to support system reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR, etc), and present technical outcomes to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to design reviews, workshops, integration, test, site installation, commissioning, and sustainment activities.
  • Support systems integration, verification and validation, including test planning, execution and analysis.
  • Support technical risk analysis and contribute to major reviews throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support the development and maintenance of Land Capability system configuration baselines and engineering assets.
  • Identify and resolve complex technical issues through structured analysis and root-cause investigation.
  • Apply configuration and change management processes to maintain engineering baselines and CMCA assets.
  • Provide technical input to project reporting, risk management and Earned Value Management activities.
  • Act as a technical SME for assigned systems/assets and contribute to the development of less experienced engineers.
  • Support technical proposals for, and delivery of, mission-critical capability.
  • Liaise with customers, end-users, subcontractors and suppliers.
About You

You will be a capable Systems Engineer with approximately 5–8 years’ experience, ideally working with complex, software-intensive or mission-critical systems within the Defence environment.

You will bring
  • Strong systems engineering capability across requirements, architecture/design, integration, verification and validation, and configuration/change management.
  • Experience working across multiple stages of the systems engineering lifecycle; full lifecycle experience is highly desirable.
  • Experience with DOORS or equivalent requirements management tools and CAMEO Systems Modeler or equivalent MBSE tools.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting and root-cause analysis capability.
  • Experience developing and managing technical work packages with minimal supervision.
  • The ability to work effectively with engineering, project, assurance, customer and industry stakeholders.
  • Defence domain experience, particularly C4ISR, combat systems, communications, sensors or complex Land Systems, is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with ASDEFCON engineering deliverables, networking and cyber security considerations is advantageous.
  • Experience with Python, MATLAB, test automation or technical data analysis would be beneficial.
  • Experience mentoring engineers or leading small technical workstreams is desirable.

A Bachelor’s degree in Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Software/Computer Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline is expected. INCOSE, Engineers Australia or equivalent professional membership is desirable.

Security & ITAR
  • Australian Defence Security Clearance – NV1 is required. Information including past and present nationality and citizenship may be requested to check eligibility for access to materials controlled under various export control regimes, including ITAR.
  • Ability to access and work with ITAR-controlled information.

This is an opportunity to work on a nationally significant Land Capability program where your engineering expertise will directly contribute to the integration, deployment and long-term sustainment of complex Defence capability.

If you are a Systems Engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, working across the engineering lifecycle and seeing your technical work translate into real operational capability, we would like to hear from you.
