Job description

At Transgrid, we play a crucial role in delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable energy to millions of Australians. Operating over 13,000 km of high-voltage transmission lines and 128 substations across NSW and the ACT, we connect electricity generators to the distribution network, powering homes, businesses, and communities.

The Opportunity

We're looking for highly motivated System Operators to join our Network Operations team. Based at either Newcastle depot or in Sydney at our Eastern Creek depot, you'll be at the frontline of real-time decision-making that keeps the high-voltage transmission network stable and reliable. This role offers a unique opportunity to be part of a critical 24/7 control room operation supporting some of the most important infrastructure in the country.

This is a shift work role with ongoing opportunities to rotate into office-based planning functions, building broader capability and career development within one of the most essential teams in our business.

A Day in the Life of a System Operator at Transgrid

No two days are ever quite the same. As a System Operator, you'll be monitoring and managing the high-voltage transmission network in real time, working closely with colleagues, field crews, engineers, and AEMO to keep the system running safely and efficiently. You'll have a front-row seat to some of the biggest transformations in the energy sector while operating in a fast-paced, technically rich environment.

On any given shift, you could be:

  • Supervising or directing planned outages and switching operations.
  • Monitoring voltages, fault levels, and load flows to ensure network stability.
  • Responding to alarms and unplanned events, making quick, sound decisions under pressure.
  • Liaising with AEMO and other market participants to coordinate outages.
  • Providing clear instructions to field staff and emergency responders.
  • Supporting the preparation and review of outage plans, HV PRIs, and contingency procedures.
  • Contributing to procedure updates and adopting new technologies that support smarter operations.

Throughout your shift, you'll be supported by a close-knit and highly skilled team of operators and engineers who share a strong safety culture, technical excellence, and pride in their work.

About You

You're a technically capable, calm under pressure, and solutions-focused professional who enjoys solving complex operational problems. You thrive in structured, high-responsibility environments and are driven by the idea of doing meaningful work that impacts the entire state.

We're interested in hearing from candidates who have:

  • An Advanced Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering (or are actively working toward it).
  • Experience with high-voltage systems, network operations, switching, or control room environments.
  • Strong understanding of transmission equipment, protection and control systems, and network safety protocols.
  • Working knowledge of Power System Safety Rules and switching instruction preparation.
  • The ability to work rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Effective communication skills with confidence in liaising with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Competency in using SCADA or EMS platforms and Windows-based systems.

You may currently be working as a Network Operator, HV Switching Technician, Protection and Control Technician, or in a similar role within a utility, AEMO, or industrial setting.

Above all, you're someone who takes ownership of your work, values safety and teamwork, and wants to be part of a team contributing to Australia's clean energy future.

At Transgrid, we empower our people with a well-rounded benefits package designed to support their personal, professional, and social well-being, helping them deliver their best work every day.
