Job summary

South Eastern Sydney Local Health District is seeking a Casual Suicide Prevention Peer Worker for the SafeHaven service in Kogarah, Sydney. The role involves providing compassionate peer support to individuals in suicidal distress and guiding them to appropriate services, within an after-hours drop-in program.

You will participate in staff education on suicide prevention, work with a multidisciplinary team, and contribute to ongoing service improvements in a contemporary, supportive environment.

Qualifications

• Lived experience of suicidal crisis and ability to provide peer support.
• Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work or relevant work experience as a Peer Support Worker; for Graduate Health Education Officers, additional health degree.
• Experience using recovery-oriented, trauma-informed principles and situational distress approaches.

Responsibilities

• Provide peer support to people experiencing suicidal distress and connect them with appropriate services.
• Deliver education to staff and community about suicide prevention and safety planning.
• Work in Safe Haven after-hours setting (5pm–9pm, 6 days/wk) with training and supervision.
