Job summary

Commonwealth Bank is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead the design and delivery of scalable solutions across customer channels and data platforms in our Business Banking Technology group.

You'll influence engineering direction, mentor engineers, and work across backend, cloud, and AI-enabled services to deliver high-impact customer outcomes. This role offers Sydney or Melbourne locations with hybrid options.

Qualifications

• Proven experience designing and delivering complex software solutions within large-scale or distributed environments.
• Strong hands-on software engineering capability and a passion for solving challenging technical problems.
• Experience building cloud-native applications, APIs, platforms or data-driven services.
• Ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on delivery.
• Experience influencing technical direction, architecture and engineering standards.
• Mentoring engineers and uplift capability across teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and delivery of scalable, resilient software solutions across customer channel and data platforms.
• Build and evolve applications, APIs, services and platform capabilities that support critical Business Banking experiences.
• Contribute across the technology stack, including backend services, cloud platforms, customer experiences and data-enabled solutions.
• Drive architectural decisions and influence engineering direction within and across squads.
• Champion modern software engineering practices including automated testing, CI/CD, observability and DevSecOps.
• Partner closely with product, business and architecture stakeholders to deliver meaningful customer outcomes.
• Mentor engineers and help grow technical capability across the broader organisation.
• Support platforms in production and drive continuous improvement through automation, monitoring and operational excellence.
