Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Bachelor degree or above in computer science or software engineering related majors.
• Experience solving distributed systems challenges - scalability, consistency, latency.
• Mastery of backend technologies; Kotlin w/ vert.x, Temporal & Kafka.
• Experience with automated tests and quality control processes.
• Cloud technologies experience with GCP or AWS, including Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience integrating with observability tooling such as Splunk, NewRelic, Prometheus, Grafana.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to the architecture and long‑term technical vision of backend systems.
• Own the end‑to‑end delivery of core investment workflows—from design to production.
• Build and maintain mission‑critical financial infrastructure, such as reconciliation controls and investment ledgers.
• Write high‑quality, testable code with focus on reliability and maintainability.
• Promote engineering best practices with emphasis on observability and API design.
• Collaborate with Product, Infrastructure, and Design to ensure optimal user experiences.

About the team

The Business Accounts Team is building the intelligent orchestration layer for Airwallex’s business account ecosystem - connecting Cash, Yield, Lending, and broader Airwallex product surfaces into one unified financial experience for businesses.
As Airwallex continues to expand its product suite, our customers increasingly need programmable, automated, and intelligent ways to manage their money: moving funds between transactional accounts, yield‑generating accounts, and lending facilities; optimising liquidity; and responding dynamically to business activity across payments, card spend, collections, and future product lines.
Business Accounts is a new strategic domain designed to power this next generation of financial automation. This is a high‑impact opportunity to join a new team at an early stage, shape the technical foundations of a core business platform, and build products that sit at the centre of Airwallex’s business customer experience.

What you'll do

As the Staff Software Engineer on the Business Accounts team, you will help build the intelligent orchestration layer for Airwallex’s business account ecosystem, connecting Cash, Yield, Lending, and broader Airwallex product surfaces into a unified financial experience for businesses.

This role is based in Sydney.

Responsibilities:

• Contribute to the architecture and long‑term technical vision of our backend systems, helping define the engineering strategy and framework selection for the Yield squad.

• Own the end‑to‑end delivery of core investment workflows, including client signup, investment, and redemption processes—from design to production.

• Build and maintain mission‑critical financial infrastructure, such as reconciliation controls, unit registries, and investment ledgers.

• Write high‑quality, testable code with a focus on reliability and maintainability, ensuring seamless integration with our external investment providers.

• Promote and uphold engineering best practices, with a strong emphasis on observability, API design, and robust integration rails.

• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams including Product, Infrastructure, and Design to ensure our product delivers the best possible experience for businesses.

Who you are

We’re looking for people who meet the minimum qualifications for this role. The preferred qualifications are great to have, but are not mandatory.

Minimum qualifications:

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience.

• Bachelor degree or above in computer science or software engineering related majors.

• Have experience solving distributed systems challenges - scalability, consistency, latency.

• Mastery of backend technologies is essential. While we do not mind what language you have most recently been using, we are using Kotlin w/ vert.x, Temporal & Kafka

• Experience working with automated tests and been involved in quality control processes.

• Cloud technologies experience with GCP or AWS, including Docker and Kubernetes.

• Experience integrating with observability tooling such as Splunk, NewRelic, Prometheus, Grafana.

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience in financial services, lending, payments, or credit products

• Experience with SaaS product offering as a platform.
