Job summary

Commonwealth Bank is seeking a Staff Software Engineer in Melbourne to lead hands-on engineering initiatives, shape reusable platforms and automation, and advance cloud and AI-driven engineering practices across multiple teams.

You will elevate developer experience, build scalable pipelines and mentor engineers to adopt secure, reliable delivery patterns in a modern software delivery environment.

Qualifications

• Strong software engineering fundamentals with practical solutions and automation.
• Experience across multiple programming languages and tech stacks.
• Experience designing, building and operating cloud-based software or platforms, ideally using AWS.
• Knowledge of modern delivery practices: IaC, CI/CD, observability, reliability engineering and secure development.
• Experience with containers and runtime platforms such as Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience using AI-powered engineering tools to improve productivity and quality.
• Ability to explain complex concepts and influence decisions across teams.
• Collaborative, adaptable mindset with a focus on mentoring and improving developer experience.

You will:

You’ll bring strong software engineering fundamentals, broad technical curiosity and a passion for making engineering better for others. We use a wide range of technologies, so we don’t expect you to know everything. Experience across several of the following areas, or comparable technologies, will help set you up for success.

• Strong hands-on software engineering experience, including designing practical solutions, writing high-quality code and automating engineering workflows.
• Deep experience in one or more programming languages, with the versatility to work across different languages and technology stacks.
• Experience designing, building and operating cloud-based software or engineering platforms, ideally using Amazon Web Services.
• Knowledge of modern delivery practices, including infrastructure as code, continuous integration and delivery, observability, reliability engineering and secure software development.
• Experience with containers and runtime platforms such as Docker, Kubernetes or equivalent technologies.
• Practical experience using AI-powered engineering tools to improve productivity, quality, testing, documentation or automation.
• The ability to explain complex technical concepts, influence decisions and guide teams through engineering change.
• A collaborative, adaptable and continuous-improvement mindset, with a genuine interest in mentoring others and simplifying developer experience.
