Rumbalara Aboriginal Co-operative – Family, Care and Early Years is recruiting a Specialist Disability Practitioner for a full-time, fixed-term position to 30/06/2028. This Aboriginal Designated Position requires Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander eligibility under the Equal Opportunity Act.

The role strengthens disability-informed practice and improves outcomes for children, young people and families affected by disability.

Qualifications

• Diploma qualifications or relevant experience in Disability, Community Services, or equivalent.
• Sound knowledge of Aboriginal community needs and families (including carers) to link them to supports.
• Ability to communicate and advocate for children, young people and parents/carers.
• Experience with child-centred, family-led and strengths-based approaches in community settings.
• Understanding of disability and its impact on family wellbeing and service access barriers.
• Knowledge of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) including access, planning, implementation and review.
• Experience collaborating with NDIS-funded providers, LACs, Support Coordinators and allied health.
• Understanding of Family Services reforms, early intervention and integrated service delivery.

About the Role

The Specialist Disability Practitioner plays a critical role within the Family Services system, strengthening disability-informed practice and improving outcomes for children, young people, and families affected by disability. The position supports the objectives of contemporary Family Services reforms by promoting early intervention, integrated service responses, child-centred practice, and improved access to disability supports across the service system.

The role is responsible for building disability capability within Family Services, ensuring children, young people, parents, carers, and families can effectively access and engage with appropriate disability supports, including the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The Specialist Disability Practitioner works collaboratively with families, Family Services Practitioners, Child Protection, education, health, and community services to reduce barriers to participation and improve wellbeing and developmental outcomes.

About You

• You are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
• A minimum Diploma qualifications or relevant experience in Disability, Community Services, or equivalent.
• A sound knowledge of the needs of Aboriginal community and families including carers needs to link them into the relevant support services.
• A demonstrated skill to communicate and advocate on behalf of children, young people and parents/carers.
• Demonstrated experience working with children, young people, families and carers in community-based services using child-centred, family-led and strengths-based approaches.
• Sound understanding of disability, its impact on family wellbeing, and the barriers families may experience in accessing services, supports and community participation.
• Knowledge of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), including access, planning, implementation and review processes.
• Experience, or the ability to effectively engage and collaborate, with NDIS-funded providers, Local Area Coordinators (LACs), Support Coordinators, allied health professionals and advocacy services.
• Understanding of the Family Services sector and contemporary reform approaches, including early intervention, integrated service delivery and child and family wellbeing principles.
• Demonstrated commitment to culturally safe and inclusive practice, including an understanding of the unique experiences and strengths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families and communities.
• Highly developed communication, consultation, negotiation and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively across service systems and multidisciplinary teams.
• Ability to provide specialist advice, secondary consultation and capacity-building support to practitioners to strengthen disability-informed practice and improve outcomes for children and families.
• Demonstrated initiative, sound judgement and strong organisational skills, with the capacity to work independently and collaboratively in complex service environments.
