Work across applications, integrations, cloud, infrastructure and security in a varied solution design role Help shape technology solutions that support the University’s teaching, research and strategic priorities

Why join the University of Sydney?

Join one of Australia’s leading universities at a pivotal point of change, where technology is evolving to better support student learning, empower teaching excellence, and enable research delivery at global scale. ICT is central to delivering the University’s academic mission. Working across faculties, disciplines, and research communities and operational teams, you will contribute to the platforms, services, and partnerships that enable student success, strengthen teaching, and accelerate research impact. This work spans both the critical services that keep the University running every day and the ongoing improvement of systems and experiences. With strong investment and clear direction in a digital strategy, you’ll operate in a large and complex environment where your contribution is part of a visible, meaningful impact across the University. You’ll collaborate across academic and professional communities to help shape a more connected and capable University, supporting teaching excellence, research impact, and student success.

The Opportunity

As a Solution Designer, you will work from business and project requirements to determine practical technology solutions within the University’s enterprise architecture standards and guardrails. You will develop and document high-level and detailed solution designs, work closely with business stakeholders and technical specialists, and provide technical leadership throughout solution delivery. You will collaborate across application, infrastructure, cloud, security and other technology teams, preparing designs for stakeholder and governance review and helping delivery teams implement approved solutions. You will also contribute to solution design standards, templates and strategies, and share knowledge across the team. You’ll join a collaborative and supportive environment where diverse perspectives are valued, with flexible working arrangements and opportunities to contribute to impactful projects. This role is ideal for a technically strong and collaborative professional who can translate business needs into practical solutions, communicate confidently with a wide range of stakeholders, and manage competing priorities in a complex project environment.

What you’ll do
  • Develop high-level and detailed solution designs for ICT and business initiatives.
  • Work with business stakeholders and project teams to determine appropriate solution options from agreed requirements.
  • Design and document how applications, integrations and technology components work together.
  • Collaborate with application specialists, infrastructure, cloud operations and security teams throughout solution delivery.
  • Prepare solution designs for stakeholder, governance and peer review, and communicate risks, issues and decisions.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to delivery teams throughout projects.
  • Contribute to solution design standards, templates and strategies, while mentoring and sharing knowledge with other team members.
What we’re looking for
  • Proven experience developing and documenting high-level and detailed solution designs.
  • Strong understanding of applications, application integration, technology stacks and cloud environments.
  • Understanding of non-functional requirements and how they influence solution design, including security considerations.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to work effectively across business and technical teams.
  • Experience working across complex ICT projects and managing competing priorities within agreed timeframes.
  • Experience working in both agile and waterfall delivery environments, with a relevant postgraduate qualification and/or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Willingness to adapt to, and apply new and emerging techniques and skills in your work practices.
What’s in it for you?
  • 17% superannuation to support your financial future
  • Generous parental leave entitlements.
  • Competitive salary with salary packaging options
  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements
  • Career development and learning opportunities
  • Health and wellbeing programs including Fitness Passport
  • Access to a vibrant, globally recognised university community
