Job summary

BLACKROC Recruitment is seeking two Software Engineers (Front-end) to build modern web applications that leverage AI, ML, and analytics. You’ll work in a multidisciplinary team alongside Data Scientists and AI Engineers, delivering intuitive user interfaces and conversational experiences.

The role is primarily front-end with scope to contribute across the stack, in a flexible hybrid setup across Melbourne or Sydney. Initial 12-month duration with a further extension may apply.

Company Overview

BLACKROC is partnering with a major federal government agency to recruit two Software Engineers (Front-end).

Role Purpose

You'll join a multidisciplinary data science and AI team, building modern web applications that put AI, machine learning and analytics into the hands of the people who use them. That covers generative AI assistants, document search, decision-support tools and business applications. You'll work alongside Data Scientists, AI Engineers and Business Analysts, turning complex requirements into intuitive, accessible and reliable user experiences. The role is primarily front-end, with scope to contribute across the stack.

Key Responsibilities

• Build intuitive, accessible and responsive interfaces for AI-enabled, analytical and data-driven applications
• Translate business requirements into practical technical solutions alongside stakeholders
• Integrate front ends with REST APIs, cloud services and AI/ML platforms, including streaming and real-time interactions
• Build AI user experiences such as conversational interfaces, document search, citation displays, streaming responses and agent-based workflows
• Develop reusable components and front-end architecture that scale across products
• Apply engineering best practice: testing, code review, source control and automated CI/CD
• Support discovery work, proofs of concept, pilots and production-ready solutions

Required Skills & Experience

• End-to-end feature ownership, from requirements and UX decisions through to testing and deployment
• Experience building responsive, accessible interfaces for complex workflows or data-driven products
• Strong React fundamentals: component architecture, state management, performance optimisation and front-end testing
• Experience integrating with REST APIs and asynchronous services, including real-time or streaming interactions
• Modern engineering practice: Git, code review, automated testing, and maintaining CI/CD pipelines

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

• AI-enabled UIs: chat experiences, streaming responses, prompt design, citation displays, document search or agent workflows
• Familiarity with LLM platforms such as Amazon Bedrock, OpenAI or Anthropic, plus exposure to RAG or vector search
• Backend exposure in Python, preferably FastAPI
• AWS cloud-native or serverless experience (Lambda, API Gateway, S3, DynamoDB, Bedrock), Docker, and CDK or Terraform
