Job summary

Alpine MDF Industries in Wangaratta, Victoria, is seeking a trade qualified Shift Maintenance Fitter to join our site engineering team. You will provide hands-on maintenance of mechanical plant and equipment, supporting production teams and driving reliability.

Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Supervisor, the role involves preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis, and continuous improvement on a 7‑day 12‑hour rotating roster.

Qualifications

• Trade qualified fitter and machinist or similar mechanical trade.
• Experience with maintenance of mechanical plant and equipment.
• Strong problem-solving and diagnostic skills.

Responsibilities

• Maintain mechanical plant and equipment to minimize downtime.
• Provide technical support to maintenance and production teams.
• Perform preventative maintenance and continuous improvement tasks.
• Diagnose faults and rectify machinery issues.
• Plan and prioritise tasks, ensuring safe work practices.

Job description

Alpine MDF Industries is a leading wood processing facility based in Wangaratta, North East Victoria. We manufacture and distribute MDF products both nationally and internationally, providing stable employment for over 140 local workers.

Our primary focus is the production of Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF), widely used in the construction and related industries. In addition to our core manufacturing operations, we operate an on-site re-manufacturing facility, enhancing raw MDF into high-quality building products. These include pre-painted skirting boards, architraves, door and window components, and decorative wall lining panels.

About the role

We are currently seeking a trade qualified Shift Maintenance Fitter to join our team. Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Supervisor you will have proven experience providing technical knowledge and solutions for the hands‑on day to day maintenance of mechanical plant and equipment. The position is key to supporting the Site Production teams, improving reliability and carrying out preventative maintenance programs across the production areas to minimise plant down time and improve the efficiency of the operation.

This is a full‑time position working on a 7‑day, 12hr rotating shift roster;

• 4-week Rotating Shift Roster Cycle
• Engineering tradesperson competency levels C10 - C7

Key Responsibilities include but not limited to:

• Working in a team environment to resolve day to day maintenance issues;
• Providing technical support to both maintenance & production personnel;
• Carrying out preventative maintenance and continuous improvement tasks;
• Diagnosis / fault finding techniques of mechanical equipment and rectification of faults;
• Performing breakdown maintenance;
• Prioritisation, planning and organising tasks;
• Compliance to industry standard practices;
• Absolute commitment to safe work systems.

To be successful in the role:

• Trade qualified fitter and machinist, or similar Mechanical trade qualification, with experience in a similar role;
• Analysis and problem-solving skills;
• Experience in Pneumatic and Hydraulic circuits;
• Good Interpersonal skills;
• EWP Licence (Advantageous);
• Experience in Welding (Advantageous);
• Experience in using maintenance system ‘Mainpac’ (Advantageous);
• Working in Confined Space Certificate (Advantageous);
• High Risk – Forklift licence (Advantageous).
