Job summary

Caterpillar Inc. in Australia seeks a Senior Software Developer to design, develop and deliver cloud-based, scalable applications for MineStar initiatives. You will build backend services with Python, APIs and data integration, plus React-based front-ends for responsive UX.

Qualifications

About the Opportunity

MineStar is transforming the way mines operate through automation, digitisation, analytics and AI. As a Senior Software Developer, you will play a key technical role in designing, developing and delivering digital productivity solutions that help mining customers improve safety, efficiency and operational performance.

Working within the Product & Platform team, you will develop modern, scalable applications using AWS cloud services, Python backend technologies and React-based front-end technologies. You will work closely with Product Owners, architects, engineers, UX specialists and other MineStar teams to take solutions from concept through to production.

This is a hands-on senior development role for someone who enjoys solving complex problems, contributing to technical direction and helping build high-quality solutions that can operate reliably at scale.

What you will be involved in

• Design, develop, test and maintain scalable digital applications and services using AWS, Python and React.
• Build robust backend services and APIs using Python and modern software engineering practices.
• Develop responsive, intuitive and maintainable user experiences using React and modern front-end technologies.
• Design and implement cloud-native solutions using AWS services and established architectural patterns.
• Contribute to solution architecture, technical design and technology decisions across the product portfolio.
• Work closely with Product Owners, architects, UX specialists and engineers to translate customer and business needs into effective technical solutions.
• Integrate applications with MineStar, enterprise platforms, data services and other internal and external systems.
• Build solutions that incorporate automation, analytics and AI capabilities where they provide meaningful customer value.
• Apply strong software engineering practices across code quality, testing, security, performance, observability and maintainability.
• Participate in code reviews and technical design reviews, providing constructive guidance to other developers.
• Troubleshoot complex application and production issues and drive problems through to resolution.
• Support continuous improvement of development practices, tools, standards and reusable components.
• Provide technical mentoring and support to other developers while contributing to a collaborative engineering culture.
• Work with globally distributed teams and delivery partners to deliver reliable, supportable solutions.

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking an experienced Senior Software Developer with a strong combination of cloud, backend and front-end development experience ideally with a background in a Mining industry .

You will bring:

• Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
• Significant professional software development experience delivering production applications in complex enterprise environments.
• Strong backend development experience using Python, including the development of APIs, services and application business logic.
• Strong front-end development experience using React, JavaScript/TypeScript and modern web application development practices.
• Demonstrated experience designing and developing cloud-based solutions using AWS.
• Experience designing and integrating REST APIs, data services and distributed application components.
• Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns and maintainable software engineering practices.
• Experience with automated testing, source control, code review and modern CI/CD development practices.
• Understanding of cloud security, application security, authentication and authorisation principles.
• Experience diagnosing application performance, reliability and production issues.
• Ability to work effectively with Product Owners, architects, UX specialists and other engineering teams.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to turn complex requirements into practical and scalable solutions.
• Ability to communicate technical concepts, design decisions, risks and trade-offs clearly.
• Experience supporting and mentoring other developers and contributing to engineering standards and practices.

Highly regarded experience includes

• Experience with serverless, containerised or event-driven architectures on AWS.
• Experience working with SQL Server and PostgreSQL, including database integration and querying.
• Experience with data, analytics, machine learning or AI-enabled applications.
• Experience developing solutions that integrate with large enterprise or industrial technology platforms.
• Experience with mining, industrial technology, operational technology or asset-intensive industries.
• Knowledge of MineStar™ or comparable mining technology platforms.
• Experience working with globally distributed software engineering teams and external development partners.
