Job summary

Viasat is seeking a Senior Project Manager to drive the successful execution of a complex defence sustainment program in Canberra, Australia. You will lead multidisciplinary teams, set clear roles, and ensure governance, safety and compliance throughout the program lifecycle.

The role requires 8+ years in programme management with defence exposure, strong leadership, financial acumen and experience guiding senior executives and customer representatives.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated minimum of 8 years' programme management experience, with exposure to defence projects capability sustainment.
  • Proven experience as a Lead Project Manager or Senior Delivery Leader managing complex, multi-discipline projects.

  • Lead multidisciplinary project teams, establishing clear roles and accountabilities and ensuring delivery meets scope, schedule, quality and governance requirements.
  • Oversee schedule, budget, risks, issues, dependencies and change control; report to stakeholders with data-driven insights.
  • Ensure compliance with contractual, organisational and security obligations (NV1 and ITAR).
  • Support the Program Manager to ensure successful program delivery.

What you’ll do

The Senior Project Manager is responsible for the successful execution and completion of multi-discipline technology projects to support a complex defence sustainment program.

The day-to-day

What’s the day-to-day like for this candidate?

  • Lead multidisciplinary project teams, establishing clear roles, responsibilities and accountabilities, integrating specialists into discovery, solution definition, work package initiation, estimation and prioritisation, and providing direction and oversight to ensure delivery meets agreed scope, schedule, quality and governance requirements, while encouraging a collaborative, high-performance culture and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure project governance, plans and controls align to organisational and customer requirements, with oversight of schedule, budget and benefits realisation, risks, issues, dependencies and assumptions, and change and configuration management, including interested party reporting and compliance with contractual, organisational and security obligations.
  • Act as a trusted partner to the customer, engaging senior interested parties to lead expectations and risks, providing clear, data-driven advice and insights on project performance, and supporting alignment to broader organisational, strategic and operational objectives.
  • Identify, assess, and manage project risks. Apply appropriate PM methods and tools whether traditional (waterfall) or adaptive (iterative/agile) approaches. Agree project approach with interested parties, and prepare realistic plans (including quality, risk and communications plans) and supervises project activities.
  • Champion safety, compliance, and operational excellence throughout the program lifecycle.
  • Support the Program Manager as required to ensure successful program delivery.
What you’ll need
  • Demonstrated minimum of 8 years' of programme management experience, with exposure to defence projects capability sustainment.
  • Proven experience as a Lead Project Manager or Senior Delivery Leader managing complex, multi-discipline projects. Ideally, this includes work within a prime contractor environment. Experience leading discovery or crafting phases and defining, prioritising, and prioritizing work packages is required.
  • Well-developed leadership, interested party engagement and strong presentation skills, with experience leading project teams and influencing senior executives and customer representatives
  • Sound financial and commercial acumen, including managing budgets, forecasts and project-level financial performance, alongside the ability to operate effectively in complex environments using sound judgement, a solutions-focused approach, and relevant program/project management and Microsoft Office tools.
  • Experience leading end to end project oversight and delivery - including project planning, budget management, risk management, issue management, personnel management, client management, commercial issue management, testing management.
  • Active NV1 Security Clearance
  • Meet International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) requirements.
What will help you on the job
  • Broad technical understanding of satellite telecommunications processes, systems, infrastructure, and technologies.
  • Deep understanding of service management principles, frameworks, and standard methodologies, including incident management, change management, problem management, and service level management.
  • Experience in project programming and critical path analysis by implementing strategies which address project, delivery, and risk to ensure the most appropriate standards and requirements are developed and implemented.
  • Service Management and Project Management certification (e.g., ITIL, PMP, PRINCE2, Agile) is highly desirable.
