Job summary

Santos Limited in Brisbane seeks a Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer to provide specialist mechanical support, assurance and governance across Midstream & Energy Solutions projects. The role ensures safe, reliable, and compliant engineering outcomes throughout asset lifecycles.

You will lead technical reviews, mentor engineers, support MOC processes and collaborate with operations to mitigate vulnerabilities while driving continuous improvement and safe practices across the enterprise.

Qualifications

• Significant mechanical engineering experience in oil & gas, petrochemical or similar industries.
• Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline with eligibility for RPEQ and Chartered status.
• Thorough understanding of relevant technical standards and regulatory frameworks.

Responsibilities

• Provide specialist mechanical engineering expertise across development projects, brownfield activities and operating assets.
• Perform technical assessments and assurance of deliverables to ensure compliance with Santos and regulatory requirements.
• Review contractor and vendor deliverables for alignment with standards and regulatory expectations.
• Mentor graduate and early-career engineers to build capability and succession strength.
• Foster continuous improvement to enhance safety, reliability and performance.

What you’ll do:

Based in Brisbane, the Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer provides specialist mechanical engineering support, technical assurance, and discipline governance for Midstream & Energy Solutions assets and projects — ensuring safe, reliable, and compliant engineering outcomes throughout the asset lifecycle.

Key accountabilities include:

• Providing specialist mechanical engineering expertise, technical advice and support to development projects, brownfield activities and operating assets across Midstream & Energy Solutions
• Performing technical assessments, reviews and assurance of engineering deliverables to ensure compliance with Santos, regulatory and industry requirements
• Reviewing and assuring contractor and vendor engineering deliverables for alignment with legislative, corporate and industry standards
• Collaborating with reliability, maintenance and operations teams to identify and mitigate equipment vulnerabilities, reliability risks and obsolescence challenges
• Supporting investigations into discipline-related incidents, failures and performance issues, providing technical analysis and recommendations
• Fulfilling the role of Change Advisor within the Management of Change (MOC) process and providing technical guidance on proposed changes
• Ensuring process safety, asset integrity and personnel safety considerations are embedded throughout project development, design and execution
• Contributing to discipline engineering planning, forecasting and annual budget development
• Mentoring, coaching and developing graduate and early-career engineers to build discipline capability and succession strength
• Fostering continuous improvement through initiatives that enhance safety, reliability, operational performance and engineering effectiveness

What you’ll bring:

You will be experienced in:

• Significant mechanical engineering experience supporting operations and projects in oil and gas, petrochemical or similar industries
• Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline, with eligibility for RPEQ and Chartered Engineering status
• Thorough understanding of relevant technical standards and regulatory frameworks relating to the oil and gas industry
• Demonstrated ability to lead, communicate, mentor and coach engineers in a corporate environment
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage a broad range of internal and external stakeholders
• Strong collaboration skills within multi-disciplined engineering teams, including the ability to remotely support project teams
• Experience in incident investigation and providing technical recommendations to support lessons learned
• Familiarity with Management of Change (MOC) processes and acting as a Change Advisor
• Experience in Major Hazard Facility (MHF) or refining environments will be highly regarded
