Job summary

Abacus Human Capital Pty Ltd is recruiting a Principal Financial Accountant for a Queensland Government department based in Brisbane. The role reports to the Manager of Financial Accounting and focuses on statutory financial reporting, compliance with Australian Accounting Standards and Queensland Treasury requirements.

Qualifications

• Previous Queensland Government financial accounting experience is essential.
• Extensive experience preparing annual statutory financial statements and supporting external audits.
• Strong knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards and Queensland Treasury Financial Reporting Requirements.
• Experience preparing detailed reconciliations, movement schedules, lead schedules and financial statement disclosures.
• Proficiency in SAP financial systems.
• Intermediate Power BI skills.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to provide technical accounting advice to senior stakeholders.
• Strong leadership capabilities and the ability to support and guide finance team members.
• Relevant accounting qualifications and CPA/CA membership will be highly regarded.

Responsibilities

• Lead the preparation of annual statutory financial statements in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards and Queensland Treasury reporting requirements.
• Coordinate external audit processes and ensure compliance with statutory financial reporting obligations.
• Prepare and review month-end journals, reconciliations, movement schedules and financial statement disclosures.
• Provide expert technical accounting advice to senior management on complex financial reporting matters.
• Interpret accounting standards, legislation and regulatory changes to ensure ongoing compliance.
• Prepare financial reports, position papers and briefings for senior management and key stakeholders.
• Support and mentor finance team members, contributing to the effective delivery of financial accounting operations.
• Identify opportunities to improve financial reporting processes, policies and procedures.
