Job summary

Westpac Group in Sydney is seeking a Senior Engineer to design, develop and maintain high-quality APIs, microservices and applications using Java, Spring Boot and Node.js, translating business needs into scalable technical solutions.

You will collaborate with product managers and engineers, contribute to architecture decisions, and champion CI/CD and DevOps practices, while resolving production issues and driving performance improvements.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years in software engineering with API/microservices design and development.
  • RESTful API design, development and integration experience.
  • Advanced SQL with PostgreSQL and MySQL.
  • Event-driven architectures using Kafka.
  • Git/Bitbucket collaboration and version control.
  • CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tooling such as Bamboo.
  • Strong software design, testing and code quality standards.

What’s the role?

As a Senior Engineer, you will be part of Operations Technology, a collaborative team focused on delivering innovative software solutions that support business success. You will design, develop and maintain high-quality APIs, microservices and applications using Java, Spring Boot and Node.js, while translating business requirements into scalable, maintainable technical solutions.

Additionally, you will build and integrate RESTful APIs, optimise database performance, and contribute to software design and architecture decisions. You will champion engineering excellence through clean coding practices, testing, code reviews and effective documentation, while supporting modern CI/CD delivery pipelines and DevOps practices.

You will work closely with product managers, engineers and stakeholders to deliver valuable business outcomes, while resolving production issues, improving system performance and ensuring reliable service operations. Your expertise will help drive continuous improvement, innovation and high-quality engineering standards across the team.

What do I need?
  • Ideally a minimum of 10 years’ experience in software engineering, including the design and development of APIs and microservices using Java, Spring Boot and Node.js.
  • Strong expertise in RESTful API design, development, integration and consumption.
  • Advanced SQL and relational database skills, including PostgreSQL and MySQL.
  • Experience designing and implementing event-driven architectures using Kafka.
  • Proficient in Git, Bitbucket and collaborative development practices, including branching and version control strategies.
  • Hands‑on experience with CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation and DevOps tooling such as Bamboo or similar platforms.
  • Strong understanding of software development methodologies, testing practices, maintainable design principles and code quality standards.
