Senior Cybersecurity Engineer | Sydney (Hybrid)
A well-established Sydney-based business is looking to bring in a senior, hands-on cybersecurity professional to take ownership of its security strategy, governance and execution. This is a newly prioritised hire with genuine executive backing, not a role sitting on the backburner.
This isn't a narrow technical specialist position, and it isn't a compliance-only or purely advisory role either. We're looking for someone who can assess the current environment, build a right-sized security strategy, and then actually drive it to completion, working alongside existing strong technical engineers rather than building everything from scratch alone.
What you'll be doing:
- Assessing the organisation's current cybersecurity posture across two technology environments currently being consolidated into one, understanding risk across infrastructure, legacy systems, and controls during a period of real technical change.
- Building a cybersecurity strategy and roadmap appropriately scaled for a 300 people business: practical and achievable, not enterprise-framework overkill.
- Owning vulnerability management and penetration testing coordination end-to-end: scoping, interpreting findings, driving remediation, and validating that issues are genuinely resolved.
- Improving internal security practices across identity and access management, endpoints, network controls and general hygiene.
- Contributing to (not solely owning) the security of the organisation's customer-facing systems, working closely with experienced engineering leads.
- Rebuilding board-level security reporting: translating technical risk into something leadership can actually use to make decisions.
- Driving execution and accountability across technical and non-technical stakeholders. This is as much about delivery and coordination as it is about technical depth.
What we're looking for:
- Broad, credible cybersecurity expertise across infrastructure, networks, vulnerabilities, controls and governance. Technically credible, though you don't need to personally implement every solution.
- A track record of building or improving security programmes, developing roadmaps, and coordinating cross-functional delivery. This is the single biggest differentiator for this role.
- Strong executive communication skills, comfortable producing reports and contributing to senior leadership and board-level discussions.
- Excellent stakeholder management and emotional intelligence, able to influence technical and non-technical people without relying on formal authority.
- High ownership and commercial pragmatism, focused on continuous, realistic improvement rather than theoretical perfection.
What's on offer:
- Salary up to $160k + super depending on experience
- Hybrid working: 2 days per week in the Sydney office
- Support from experienced technical engineers already embedded in the business
