Job summary

Aggreko in Melbourne is seeking a Senior Control Systems Engineer to lead control system design and commissioning for a major hybrid energy project. You will collaborate across offices, vendor facilities and remote sites, delivering PLC, SCADA and network solutions and supervising consultants.

You will apply hands-on engineering with FAT/SAT testing, documentation control and system handover to Operations, ensuring performance and cybersecurity considerations are addressed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor-level or higher in electrical/automation engineering and related fields.
• Significant control systems engineering experience in power, utilities or heavy industry.
• Strong PLC/SCADA and network design skills with project delivery experience.

We’re looking for a skilled and passionate Senior Control Systems Engineer to join our Engineering team and play a key role in the delivery of a major hybrid power generation project incorporating renewable generation, battery energy storage and thermal generation.

This is a permanent position, commencing with the current hybrid power plant project and continuing into future Aggreko projects and operational activities.

Working closely with the Engineering team, you will take a hands‑on technical role across control system design, engineering assurance, integration, testing and commissioning.

The role combines detailed engineering work with the technical supervision and coordination of specialist consultants delivering the project's PLC, SCADA and industrial network systems. This role will suit an experienced controls engineer who enjoys both detailed technical engineering and practical project delivery, and who is comfortable working across engineering offices, vendor facilities and remote project sites.

What You’ll Do

• Undertake design and review detailed control systems (PLC, SCADA and network).
• Develop, review and maintain PLC control philosophies, functional descriptions, cause-and-effect documentation, control narratives and system architecture.
• Support PLC programming and software development.
• Review and verify PLC, SCADA, HMI and industrial network designs prepared by and, provide technical direction and supervision to engineering consultants and vendors.
• Review control system drawings, I/O lists, network architecture, interface schedules, alarm lists, control philosophies and functional design specifications.
• Coordinate interfaces between the control system and electrical, mechanical, BESS, solar, thermal generation and balance-of-plant systems.
• Review communication protocols and interfaces including Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP , OPC UA and other industrial communication systems as applicable.
• Develop and witnessing Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT).
• Attend vendor facilities for FAT and system integration testing as required.
• Support Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), functional testing and pre-commissioning.
• Provide hands‑on troubleshooting and technical support during commissioning and plant performance testing.
• Ensure control system documentation, software backups, configuration files and final as‑built documentation are appropriately managed and handed over to Operations.

You’ll Have The Following Skills And Experience

• A degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation Engineering or a related discipline.
• Significant experience in control systems engineering within power generation, utilities, mining, oil and gas, renewables or other major industrial environments.
• Good understanding of PLC architecture, remote I/O, instrumentation interfaces and industrial communication protocols.
• Strong hands‑on experience with PLC Allen‑Bradley, Schnieder and Codesys programming.
• Strong experience with PlantSCADA systems.
• Experience designing, reviewing or troubleshooting industrial Ethernet networks.
• Experience preparing and reviewing functional design specifications and control philosophies.
• Demonstrated experience supervising or technically managing engineering consultants and system integrators.
• Practical experience with FAT, SAT, commissioning and troubleshooting complex control systems.
• Experience working with multidisciplinary engineering and construction teams.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• A practical, delivery‑focused approach and the ability to work independently when required.
• Knowledge of industrial cybersecurity and OT network design will also be advantageous.
