Job summary

Parkville Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing Service (PYMHWS) is seeking a Senior AOD Clinician to lead a Custodial FYMHS team, delivering recovery‑oriented care to young people in custody across Parkville and Cherry Creek sites. The role emphasises collaboration, dual diagnosis expertise, and governance within a multidisciplinary setting.

You will provide AOD assessments, crisis intervention, and family support while promoting culturally safe, trauma‑informed practice for diverse youth

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in tertiary and/or youth mental health
• Demonstrated ability to supervise mental health clinicians
• Knowledge of alcohol and other drugs (AOD) issues in youth
• Understanding of youth justice and/or criminal justice systems
• Commitment to recovery‑oriented, inclusive care

The Senior AOD Clinician is a key position within the Forensic Youth Mental Health Service (FYMHS). FYMHS provides specialist youth mental health care in custodial settings (Parkville and Cherry Creek sites) to young people and their families/carers.

About the Role:

The Senior Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Clinician will work in collaboration with the Custodial FYMHS Specialist Services Lead and the Custodial FYMHS multidisciplinary team to develop excellence in clinical service delivery in the areas of specialist addiction assessment and intervention.

You will be joining a skilled and supportive team in a dual diagnosis AOD specialist roleto help develop and support an enhanced model of care across PYMHWS’ Custodial FYMHS team.

What You'll Do:

• Assist and support young people in custody to address harmful behaviours resulting from problematic substance use
• Manage and undertake AOD-specific assessments and interventions.
• Provide care team consultation, liaison and support, service linkages for young people within and exiting custody.
• Conduct mental health assessments, formulate treatment plans, and provide psychological treatment, crisis intervention, family support, and systems containment for young people in need of immediate care and their families.
• Deliver clinical care that aligns with PYMHWS client-focused, accessible, and evidence-based standards, ensuring it is culturally safe, trauma-informed, and responsive to the diverse needs of all young people and families, including those from LGBTQI+, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, and multicultural and multifaith diverse populations.
• Establish and maintain strong partnerships with key agencies, community groups, and service providers through consultation, liaison, and collaborative projects, including but not limited to AOD services, Youth Justice, and primary care providers.
• Engage in professional development through FYMHS-specific and broader young mental health training initiatives.

About You:

• Eligible disciplines: Grade 4 RPN, Occupational Therapist, Social Worker and Grade 3 Psychologist
• Relevant registration and qualifications (see position description for details)
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in tertiary and/or youth mental health and a demonstrated ability to supervise mental health clinicians, and function both autonomously and collaboratively with other clinical and organisational leaders
• Demonstrated understanding of interventions for reducing alcohol and drug related harm
• A sound knowledge of the youth justice and/or criminal justice system and other relevant community based forensic services
• Motivated by youth-focused, inclusive, and recovery-oriented care
