Job summary

Plantation Management Partners Pty Ltd has been appointed Manager of the Tiwi Plantations Pty Ltd plantation establishment project on the Tiwi Islands, aiming to establish over 30,000 hectares of eucalyptus plantations and becoming Australia’s largest carbon plantation initiative.

Based at Yapilika Forestry Centre on Melville Island, you’ll sit in a small management group, reporting to the Project Manager as the technical authority on resource management across the plantation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Forestry or equivalent.
• 3–5 years' experience in plantation forestry with silvicultural knowledge.
• Working competence in GIS and inventory systems.
• Current driver’s license.
• The judgement to make calls independently.

Responsibilities

• Maintain plantation spatial databases, maps, and GIS systems for planning, monitoring, and reporting.
• Provide accurate spatial analysis and technical tools supporting operational management, regulatory compliance, carbon reporting, and resource planning.
• Maintain plantation records, inventory systems, and resource forecasts that underpin operational, financial, carbon, and stakeholder reporting.
• Coordinate and analyse inventory, growth, yield, and resource assessment data, owning data quality and calling the corrective actions when something doesn’t stack up.
• Develop plantation establishment, maintenance, and harvesting plans, including budgets, schedules, resource requirements, and operational instructions.
• Monitor performance against targets and drive productivity, efficiency, data quality, and cost improvements.
• Scope, tender and manage contractor agreements, monitoring performance, quality and compliance on site.
• Develop and maintain fire management plans, firebreak networks and seasonal preparedness in a monsoonal fire regime.

What you’ll be doing

GIS, Mapping & Technical Systems

• Maintain plantation spatial databases, maps, and GIS systems for planning, monitoring, and reporting requirements.
• Provide accurate spatial analysis and technical tools supporting operational management, regulatory compliance, carbon reporting, and resource planning.

Resource Management, Inventory & Forecasting

• Maintain plantation records, inventory systems, and resource forecasts that underpin operational, financial, carbon, and stakeholder reporting.
• Coordinate and analyse inventory, growth, yield, and resource assessment data, owning data quality and calling the corrective actions when something doesn’t stack up.

Planning & Operational Performance

• Develop plantation establishment, maintenance, and harvesting plans, including budgets, schedules, resource requirements, and operational instructions.
• Monitor performance against targets and drive productivity, efficiency, data quality, and cost improvements.

Silvicultural Management

• Develop and implement silvicultural programs covering site preparation, planting, weed control, fertilisation, pruning, thinning, and plantation health.
• Evaluate plantation performance, investigate issues, and lead trials and research in a tropical eucalypt system where the reference data is still being written.

Cost Control and Contract Management

• Build and manage operational budgets, track expenditure against plan, and report variances.
• Scope, tender and manage contractor agreements, monitoring performance, quality and compliance on site.

Fire & Forest Protection

• Develop and maintain fire management plans, firebreak networks and seasonal preparedness in a monsoonal fire regime.
• Coordinate fire response and protection activities with Tiwi land management teams and NT agencies.
• Monitor pest, disease and weed threats and lead protection responses.

About the Camp and Roster

You’ll work a 9-day fortnight 5 days on; 2 days off / 4 days on; 3 days off flying from Darwin (flights paid for by the Company).

Yapilika is a small camp by FIFO standards. It can take 115 but typically runs at 25–35 outside planting season, so you’ll know everyone’s name by the end of your first week. You’ll have your own self-contained air-conditioned room with ensuite, access to phone reception and wifi and access to a pool vehicle whilst on the island. The grounds are genuinely green with established gardens, lawns and mature trees rather than your usual mining style accommodation.

Off shift you’ll find a gym, an indoor-outdoor dining area with TV and an active social club. All meals and laundry facilities are provided.

What you’ll bring

• A Bachelor of Forestry or equivalent.
• 3 - 5 years' experience in plantation forestry with hands‑on silvicultural knowledge.
• Working competence in GIS and inventory systems.
• A current driver’s licence.
• The judgement to make calls independently.

Nice to have, but we'll train the right person:

• Eucalypt, tropical or sub‑tropical plantation experience.
• Experience in FIFO or camp-based operations.
• Experience working with Aboriginal organisations or on Aboriginal land.
