Job summary

The University of Melbourne invites applications for a Research Security Senior Technical Advisor to join the Melbourne Research & Enterprise team. You will assess research security risks, advise on mitigations, and support secure collaborations within STEMM disciplines.

You will guide researchers through export controls, sanctions and foreign interference obligations and design practical training to embed secure practices across projects.

Qualifications

  • Hold postgraduate qualifications in a relevant STEMM discipline, or equivalent relevant professional experience and training.

Responsibilities

  • Provide timely research security risk assessments, advice and compliance reviews for STEMM projects and collaborations.
  • Interpret Australian and international regulations to advise on export controls, sanctions and foreign interference obligations.
  • Design and deliver training, workshops and communications that embed responsible and secure research practices.
  • Monitor higher-risk research activities, manage potential non-compliance and support internal and external audits.
  • Build strong relationships with researchers, professional staff and regulators to protect institutional reputation and research outcomes.

Education

Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant STEMM discipline, or equivalent professional experience
Detailed knowledge of research security, foreign interference guidelines and related Australian legislation
Analytical skills, synthesising technical information and weighing ethical and geopolitical considerations
Clear communication with diverse stakeholders; ability to deliver training and written advice
Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy
Collaborative across multidisciplinary teams and external partners
