Your opportunity

We currently have an opportunity for a Regulatory Economist to join our Regulation and Economics team. As a Regulatory Economist, you’ll play a key role in shaping the economic and strategic direction of Urban Utilities’ regulatory frameworks. You’ll ensure our frameworks remain robust, forward‑looking, and aligned with evolving regulatory practices and precedents. In this role, you’ll provide expert economic analysis and modelling supported by strategic insights that support sustainable, prudent, and efficient investment decisions, helping Urban Utilities deliver long‑term value while meeting the expectations of our customers and stakeholders today and into the future.

Responsibilities
  • Support the business robustness through development of policies and procedures to operate transparently under economic regulatory oversight
  • Support the organisations economic regulatory response to advocate for economic policy positions, together with submissions to regulators as required
  • Ensure capital investments evaluation meets the minimum prudency and efficiency standards and provide guidance on financial and economic assumptions in the development of capital or commercial business cases
  • Maintain economic models and settings to ensure robust and efficient revenue and expenditure plans
  • Support the ongoing development of economic and regulatory understanding within Urban Utilities, and inform effective economic trade‑offs in decision making to ensure financial sustainability and strategic objectives

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the ability to interpret relevant State and National legislation and regulatory instruments, demonstrated record of achievement in a senior support analyst within a large commercial organisation and understanding of monopoly regulation
  • Sound understanding of the role of independent economic regulation
  • Strong economic modelling capability and experience in maintaining complex economic models
  • Sound knowledge of the economic and financial factors in which Urban Utilities operates
  • Ability to work effectively with senior management
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and undertake research and prepare submissions / reports for external bodies or senior management
  • High level of verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of the organisation
  • High level strategic, analytical and critical thinking skills, particularly applied to financial and commercial arrangements
  • A proactive stance in dealing with financial issues
