Job summary

Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation QLD – Urangan QLD is seeking a Ranger at OO5 level to lead compliance and enforcement within the Great Sandy Marine Park. You’ll guide operations on-water and respond to wildlife strandings, while coordinating with partners and communities to balance safety and conservation.

You’ll manage a small team, deliver hands-on conservation projects, and collaborate with First Nations and agencies to protect cultural and natural assets.

Qualifications

  • Evidence of leadership in compliance and enforcement roles.
  • Conservation experience in land and marine management.
  • Knowledge of legislation to identify offences and take action.
  • Maintenance, construction and project delivery skills on-site.
  • Strong communication with public and diverse stakeholders.
  • Team-oriented, safety-focused and collaborative.
  • Commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver hands-on conservation work, including pest and fire management and infrastructure upkeep.
  • Manage and inspire a small team, driving projects for environmental and recreational outcomes.
  • Collaborate with agencies and stakeholders, including local communities and First Nations peoples.
  • Respond to emergencies, from bushfires to flood recovery and marine strandings.

The Opportunity - Ranger, Great Sandy Marine Park

Join our maritime operations team as a OO5 Ranger - Compliance and help manage the spectacular Great Sandy Marine Park, where no two days are ever the same. One day you could be leading on-water compliance operations; the next, responding to marine wildlife strandings or protecting culturally significant sites.

What You'll Do

Step into a leadership role where your impact is real and visible. You'll:

  • Lead compliance and enforcement operations in the marine park, protecting wildlife, habitats and sustainable use
  • Educate and connect with the community, promoting responsible recreation and conservation
  • Deliver hands-on conservation work, from pest and fire management to maintaining vital infrastructure like walking tracks, moorings and campgrounds
  • Manage and inspire a small team, driving projects that support environmental and recreational outcomes
  • Collaborate with agencies and stakeholders, including local communities and First Nations peoples
  • Respond to emergencies, from bushfires to flood recovery works to marine animal strandings.
Collaborative & Innovative Culture

Work alongside Traditional Owners and partner agencies including Department of Fisheries and Maritime Safety Queensland. Contribute ideas that improve safety, efficiency and environmental outcomes.

We're looking for a natural leader who:
  • Has strong experience in compliance, enforcement
  • Conservation skills and experience in land and marine management
  • Understands and applies legislative knowledge to identify offences and take compliance action in the Marine Park and adjacent National Parks
  • Brings practical skills in maintenance, construction, and project delivery
  • Communicates confidently with the public and diverse stakeholders
  • Thrives in a team-focused, hands-on environment
  • Is committed to supporting positive outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
