Job summary

Nu Quantum is seeking a Photonic Design Engineer to advance our quantum networking technology by designing and optimising integrated photonic components for scalable quantum systems. You will work with cutting-edge photonics and integration technologies to meet performance and manufacturability requirements.

Qualifications

• Postgraduate-level qualification in Photonics, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
• Proven experience in photonic device design and simulation for silicon/silicon nitride, lithium niobate, or III-V platforms.
• Proficiency with photonic simulation software (Lumerical FDTD, MODE Solutions, Multiphysics).
• Experience with photonic layout tools and GDSII formats.
• Strong understanding of optical waveguide theory and electro-optic devices.
• Experience with Python or MATLAB for automation and data analysis.
• Good communication and collaborative skills in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop passive and active photonic components such as waveguides, couplers, interferometers and switches.
• Perform detailed simulations and modelling of integrated photonic circuits.
• Collaborate with fabrication teams to ensure design-for-manufacture compatibility.
• Develop and maintain design libraries, PDKs, and documentation for scalable device design.
• Analyse experimental data to validate models and improve designs.
• Work with test engineers and external partners to develop a fully integrated switch network.
• Communicate progress, risks, and results to stakeholders.
