Job description

About Us

Silicon Quantum Computing is pioneering the future of quantum technology. As the world’s first company to manufacture qubits with atomic precision, we’re delivering quantum advantage today, not decades from now. Founded by Professor Michelle Simmons, one of the world’s leading materials scientists, SQC has achieved major breakthroughs including the first single-atom transistor and the first integrated circuit built with atomic precision. Our Chair, Simon Segars, former CEO of ARM, brings deep global experience as we scale our technology and commercial impact. Our quantum machine learning chip, Watermelon, is already accelerating AI in ways classical systems can’t match, generating significant revenue and working closely with multinational partners to solve complex problems with quantum solutions. SQC is a fast‑paced, high‑accountability environment where people grow quickly and contribute meaningfully. If you’re excited by deep tech, ambitious about your career, and ready to help shape the future of computing, we’d love to hear from you.

About The Role

We are hiring a Quantum Engineer to scale and advance SQC’s silicon multi‑qubit processors. Working alongside quantum physicists, atomic fabrication engineers, software and hardware engineers, you’ll design, characterise, and optimise quantum processors based on atom spin qubits. You will operate advanced cryogenic and control systems to perform low‑noise qubit measurements, validate device performance, refine qubit control and readout, and support the scale‑up toward large error‑corrected architectures. This role suits an experimentalist who is comfortable with coding, rigorous in data analysis, and motivated to translate quantum device physics into scalable processor performance.

Role Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain cryogenic dilution refrigerator systems for advanced experiments on quantum processors
  • Design and execute experiments to characterise the processor’s performance, from low‑level device stability measurements to complex algorithmic benchmarking of scaled processors.
  • Develop and maintain measurement and data analysis code.
  • Analyse complex experimental datasets and extract clear performance metrics against defined requirements.
  • Drive project‑based development of new device designs and novel measurement capabilities.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross‑functional teams (atomic fabrication, cleanroom, theory, hardware, software) to ensure alignment on project goals and deliverables.
  • Maintain and support specialised laboratory and RF equipment
  • Contribute to technical strategy and innovation by proposing and implementing new ideas and solutions.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies in quantum computing and quantum error correction.
Your experience
Essential
  • Bachelor’s, Honours, or Master’s degree in physics, quantum engineering, electrical engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience measuring multi‑qubit or equivalent quantum devices in academic or industrial environments.
  • Proficiency in coding using Python.
  • Proven ability to conduct independent experimental research and drive projects to completion.
  • Highly organised, detail‑oriented, and able to maintain a strategic perspective in a dynamic start‑up environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams with shared ownership of outcomes.
Desirable
  • PhD in physics, quantum engineering, electrical engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Strong background in RF measurement techniques and microwave engineering.
  • Hands on experience setting up and operating cryogenic dilution refrigerator systems
  • Experience analysing and interpreting complex experimental datasets.
Please Note

This position may require access to export‑controlled information (ECI) subject to EAR and ITAR. Final employment decision is contingent upon satisfactory completion of export control screenings and obtaining any necessary export licenses or approvals, based on nationality, citizenship, and other factors considered by applicable export control regulations.
