About the role

Drive Stantec’s success by providing specialist engineering expertise across major Water projects in Australia and internationally, supporting project managers and group leaders with high‑level technical input, and delivering strong project leadership to ensure outcomes meet client expectations and Stantec’s standards for schedule, quality and technical excellence.

A day in the life of a Principal Structural Engineer looks like:
  • Lead the structural direction of major water and wastewater infrastructure projects—shaping outcomes from early concept through to delivery.

  • Solve complex engineering challenges with clarity and confidence, delivering innovative, practical solutions that differentiate Stantec in the market.

  • Act as a trusted advisor to clients by building long‑term relationships and influencing decisions through insight, credibility, and a deep understanding of project drivers.

  • Provide technical leadership across multidisciplinary teams to drive high‑quality outcomes across all phases of delivery.

  • Mentor and develop engineers, strengthening capability and fostering a high‑performance, growth‑oriented team culture.

  • Contribute to the growth of the structural discipline by sharing knowledge, improving standards, and influencing practice at both a local and national level.

  • Take ownership of technical performance by balancing scope, program, cost, and risk to consistently deliver successful outcomes.

  • Deliver high‑quality technical outputs, including complex design solutions, calculations, and compelling engineering documentation.

  • Enhance the way we deliver work by improving processes, systems, and quality standards.

  • Support business growth through technical input into proposals, bids, and client engagement.

  • Maintain and advance your professional expertise, staying at the forefront of structural engineering practice.

  • Lead by example, delivering all work in line with Stantec’s Core Values and commitment to excellence.

To be successful for this role you'll present:
  • A recognised degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.

  • Extensive experience (typically 10 years) delivering complex structural solutions across civil infrastructure projects.

  • RPEQ registration (or ability to obtain through mutual recognition).

  • Strong technical judgement, with a deep understanding of design standards, construction methodologies, and real‑world application.

  • A proven ability to solve complex problems and deliver practical, elegant, and buildable solutions.

  • Demonstrated structural leadership experience within multidisciplinary project environments.

  • A strong personal standard of quality, with pride in the work you deliver and the impact it creates.

  • A collaborative, client‑focused mindset, with experience working alongside water authorities, contractors, and key stakeholders.

  • Highly developed business and commercial acumen, with the ability to balance technical excellence with project performance outcomes.

  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to influence, engage, and clearly articulate complex ideas.

  • Experience in the water and wastewater sector, particularly in the design of water‑retaining structures, will be highly regarded.
