Job summary

Select Aust Sydney in Brisbane is seeking a Principal Financial Accountant on a temporary contract until 26/03/2027, with hybrid work and a strong pathway to extension. You will drive ledgers, month-end close, asset accounting and governance in a government-adjacent environment.

The role requires a relevant degree or CPA/CA, with proven leadership and SAP experience. You’ll partner with auditors and senior stakeholders, delivering timely insights and robust financial controls.

• Experience with SAP system.

Responsibilities

• Lead financial ledgers and month-end processing with accurate reconciliations.
• Plan, prepare and deliver annual financial statements with auditors.
• Oversee full lifecycle asset accounting including registers and valuations.
• Develop policies, internal controls and governance for statutory compliance.
• Provide timely financial advisory to stakeholders on projects and initiatives.
• Deliver executive reporting and data analysis to senior management.
• Lead capability building and continuous improvement within teams.

Job Description

Paying $88.48ph + super Brisbane CBD location with hybrid working flexibility. Temp Contract until 26/03/2027 with possible extensions.

About the Role

Our client is a QLD government organisation based in the Brisbane CBD. They are currently seeking a Principal Financial Accountant to come in and join them on a temporary contract until 26/03/2027 with possible extension.

Requirements for this role include:

• Possession of a degree in accountancy/commerce OR CPA/CA qualification
• Proven high level leadership skills in fostering procedural and change within an organisation in response to a rapidly changing environment
• Proven knowledge and experience with SAP system

Key responsibilities:

• Financial Ledger & Month-End Management: Lead the operations of financial ledgers, ensuring accuracy across all financial accounting activities, particularly end-of-month processing and reconciliation.

Annual Financial Statements & Audit Management

Apply expert knowledge to plan, prepare, and deliver annual financial statements, serving as the primary liaison with external and internal auditors.

Strategic Asset Accounting & Management

Oversee full-lifecycle non-current asset accounting, including asset registers, general ledgers, stocktakes, valuations, impairment, useful life reviews, and managing external service provider delivery.

Compliance, Governance & Policy Frameworks

Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of financial strategies, internal controls, and documented policies to maintain statutory compliance, government alignment, and sound financial management.

Financial Advisory, Projects & Innovation

Provide expert, timely advice to internal and external stakeholders, applying creative financial approaches and leading dedicated management projects to maximise business outcomes.

Executive Reporting & Data Analysis

Deliver formal, ad-hoc, and performance-driven financial reporting to senior management, offering clear insights on key accounting matters, major initiatives, and strategic business impacts.

Leadership, Capability Building & Continuous Improvement

Lead and develop direct, shared, and business unit teams, driving staff training programs, fostering high-quality work, and maintaining quality systems to support ongoing operational excellence.
