Job summary

AECOM in Sydney seeks a Principal Electrical Engineer to lead the design and delivery of complex electrical building services across aviation, healthcare, data centres, and transport projects.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to lead multiple technical projects in building services.
  • Deep knowledge of Australian Standards and building codes.
  • Experience delivering complex electrical solutions for buildings and infrastructure.

  • Chartered engineer status and local registrations preferred.

AECOM’s Building Engineering team continues to grow across Australia, and we are looking for a Principal Electrical Engineer to join our team in Sydney.

You will work alongside experienced multidisciplinary engineers delivering innovative and technically complex building services solutions across major projects in aviation, healthcare, defence, education, data centres, commercial developments and transport infrastructure.

This is an opportunity to take a leading role in project delivery, contribute technical expertise across a diverse portfolio, and help shape projects that create lasting positive impacts for our clients and communities.

How you'll make a difference:

  • Lead the design and delivery of sophisticated electrical engineering solutions across health, defence, transport, data centres, sports facilities, and other complex building projects, ensuring safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
  • Act as the senior technical authority on major projects, providing expert review, guidance, and oversight of electrical design, installation strategies, and system integration.
  • Oversee multiple electrical projects concurrently, balancing technical rigor, programme delivery, and client expectations to achieve successful outcomes.
  • Collaborate closely with multi-disciplinary teams to integrate electrical systems seamlessly into broader building services, offering technical insight on lighting, power distribution, fire and life safety, and low-voltage systems.
  • Mentor and support junior and mid-level engineers, fostering technical excellence, innovative thinking, and professional development across the team.

The qualities that help you thrive:

  • Ideally 12+ years’ experience in Electrical Engineering, gained within a Building Services consultancy, senior contracting role, or government department, with proven expertise in delivering technically complex projects across diverse sectors.
  • Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) and RPEV/RPEQ registration preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multiple technical projects simultaneously, applying advanced electrical design expertise to ensure quality and innovation.
  • Deep knowledge of Australian Standards, building codes, and electrical systems, with strong capability to provide technical leadership and mentor engineers and clients alike.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a genuine passion for mentoring, developing, and supporting engineers at earlier stages of their careers.

Due to the nature of the projects, Australian Citizenship is preferred, with prior defence clearance highly regarded.
