Job Description

Payroll Specialist - Pay Group

Parramatta CBD | Hybrid working | 3 days office / 2 days WFH | Permanent

We encourage early applications, as interviews may commence before the closing date. Payroll is one of the most important services we provide to our people, and accuracy, reliability and expertise are essential.

As Payroll Specialist - Pay Group, you'll manage the end-to-end payroll delivery for assigned pay groups, managing everything from pre-pay checks through to finalisation and post-pay reconciliation. You'll work across complex payroll matters, provide trusted advice to employees and managers, and help ensure our people receive the right pay, at the right time. This is a specialist role where your payroll expertise, judgement and attention to detail will make a direct difference to the employee experience. You'll bring strong technical payroll knowledge, and an eye for detail, with the ability to manage complex payroll matters while working to strict payroll deadlines.

What you'll be doing
  • End-to-end payroll: Manage payroll processing for assigned pay groups, including employee commencements, changes, leave, terminations, redundancies, deductions and other payroll transactions, ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time.
  • Payroll validation & reconciliation: Complete pre-pay, pay run and post-pay checks, validate payroll outcomes, investigate exceptions and discrepancies, process corrections and adjustments, and support off-cycle payrolls where required.
  • Payroll advice & support: Provide accurate and professional payroll advice to employees, managers and stakeholders, working closely with HR and Finance to resolve enquiries, complex matters and escalations.
  • Payroll compliance & controls: Apply relevant Awards, Enterprise Agreements, legislation and organisational requirements, while maintaining payroll data integrity, supporting audit requirements and contributing to effective payroll controls and governance.
  • Specialist payroll activities: Depending on business requirements, take specialist responsibility across areas such as superannuation, workers compensation and leave administration, pay progression, salary packaging and payroll payments, or payroll controls and compliance. This may include reconciliations, complex calculations, remediation activity and providing specialist advice.
  • Continuous improvement: Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes and the employee experience, and contribute to system enhancements, testing, documentation, projects and operational improvement initiatives.
What you'll bring

You'll be an experienced payroll professional with strong end-to-end payroll knowledge, ideally gained within a large, high-volume or complex payroll environment.

  • Demonstrated experience managing complex payroll transactions and non-standard pay matters.
  • Strong knowledge of Awards, Enterprise Agreements, NES, Fair Work, taxation, superannuation, leave and termination requirements.
  • The ability to accurately interpret payroll rules and apply them to individual employee circumstances.
  • Experience with complex calculations including back pay, overpayments, underpayments, terminations, leave adjustments and allowances.
  • Strong analytical skills, including reconciliations, exception checking, data validation and root-cause analysis.
  • High attention to detail and the ability to work accurately within strict payroll timeframes.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain payroll matters clearly to a range of stakeholders.
  • Experience using HRIS/payroll systems and Microsoft Excel.
  • A relevant qualification or equivalent experience in payroll, accounting, human resources, business administration or a related field.

Experience with Dayforce or another integrated HRIS/payroll system, particularly within a complex or multi-award environment, will be highly regarded. Exposure to payroll improvement, system testing, remediation or audit activities will also be advantageous.

In return, you'll enjoy:
  • Access to not-for-profit salary packaging, helping you pay less tax and take home more of your income. Better still, your full annual benefit is available from 1 April 2026, allowing you to maximise your tax savings from the start of the FBT year.
