Job summary

Technical Forest Services (TFS) in NSW North Coast (Kempsey to Coffs Harbour) is seeking a Field Technician for hands-on forest inventory and mensuration work. You will operate outdoors all day, navigating tough terrain and collecting high-quality data with digital tools.

The role offers a clear training pathway, support from a regional team, and a safety-first culture, with a fully equipped vehicle, PPE, and field technology provided for the job.

Qualifications

• Physically capable of outdoor fieldwork in variable terrain.
• Strong navigation skills using maps & GPS in country without formed tracks.
• Commitment to accurate, disciplined field reporting.
• Practical problem-solving to handle terrain, weather, access & equipment issues.
• Ability to plan daily routes and logistics for safe, efficient work.
• Valid driver’s licence with solid driving experience, including unsealed roads.
• Self-motivated, able to work independently, often solo or in small crews.
• Training provided; forestry/inventory experience preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

• Carrying out forest inventory and mensuration fieldwork across plantation and native forests.
• Navigate through dense bush to reach and identify plots.
• Capture accurate field data using digital data collection tools.
• Follow structured reporting processes, plot by plot, daily.
• Plan daily routes and logistics for efficient, safe work.
• Resolve issues in the field related to terrain, weather, or access.
• Drive 4WD vehicles to remote work sites, often on unsealed roads.
