Job summary

Freelancer.com is seeking a Network & Systems Administrator to serve as the technical backbone of IT support across global offices. This hands-on, on-site Sydney role handles senior escalations, monitoring, backups, and Google Workspace administration while aligning with our Systems Engineering team for long-term infrastructure improvements.

You will own the office IT/support function, implement cost-effective fixes, and document processes.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in a senior IT support / sysadmin role.
  • Comfortable supporting Windows, macOS and Linux.
  • Solid networking — VLANs, firewalls, IPsec/VPNs, DNS, routing.
  • Google Workspace administration experience (GAM a plus).
  • Hands-on experience with backups, virtualization and storage.
  • Experience running monitoring/alerting and responding to incidents.
  • Scripting and automation (Python/Bash) to make work repeatable.
  • Solid grasp of cybersecurity principles.
  • Strong diagnostic and root-cause skills on cross-system issues.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end IT support across our offices — the full L1-L3 gamut, primarily as the escalation point for the harder technical issues other staff can't resolve.
  • Support Sydney HQ and our remote global offices across Manila, London, Vancouver and San Francisco, coordinating with remote hands where needed.
  • Run monitoring and alerting on our existing stack — respond to incidents, investigate alerts, and keep services healthy and available across multi-site, multi-timezone offices.
  • Own backups and recovery — make sure backups run, are verifiable, and can actually be restored.
  • Administer Google Workspace across multiple domains — users, groups, Shared Drives, licensing, security settings, onboarding/offboarding and access requests.
  • Administer and maintain office network infrastructure — OPNsense/pfSense firewalls (incl. HA/CARP), IPsec VPNs, VLANs and UniFi wireless — for high availability across sites.
  • Identify problems and gaps yourself, scope them, and deliver the solutions largely on your own — with a strong bias to open-source and cost-effective fixes.
  • Maintain asset inventory and clear documentation; collaborate with other departments on their technology needs.

Job description

Are you a tech-savvy problem solver who likes owning IT end-to-end and helping real people every day? We're seeking a Network & Systems Administrator to be the technical backbone of IT support across Freelancer's global offices. This is a hands-on, on-site Sydney role. Senior escalation support is the daily core; monitoring, backups, Google Workspace, office networks and self-scoped improvement projects are the ownership layer. You'll be the senior point of the support function — handling the escalations the rest of the team can't — while keeping our existing infrastructure healthy and finding smarter ways to run it. You'll have genuine autonomy: you spot the problems, scope the fix, and deliver it yourself. You'll need to be resourceful — we favour practical, cost-effective fixes, open-source tooling, scripting and clear documentation over throwing a budget at every problem. You'll work alongside our Systems Engineering team and get visibility into the mature platform side of the business, while owning the office IT/support function long term. Working with us, you can change lives every single day. Everything we do contributes to improving the lives of our users on a global scale. Our mission is to provide one billion jobs. Not many companies actually make a difference like Freelancer does in providing opportunities and income to people all around the world.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own end-to-end IT support across our offices — the full L1-L3 gamut, primarily as the escalation point for the harder technical issues other staff can't resolve. This is the core of the role and it's customer-facing
  • Support Sydney HQ and our remote global offices across Manila, London, Vancouver and San Francisco, coordinating with remote hands where needed
  • Run monitoring and alerting on our existing stack — respond to incidents, investigate alerts, and keep services healthy and available across multi-site, multi-timezone offices
  • Own backups and recovery — make sure backups run, are verifiable, and can actually be restored (Synology NAS, image-level VM backups, offsite/cloud copies)
  • Administer Google Workspace across multiple domains — users, groups, Shared Drives, licensing, security settings, onboarding/offboarding and access requests (GAM and the admin console)
  • Administer and maintain office network infrastructure — OPNsense/pfSense firewalls (incl. HA/CARP), IPsec VPNs, VLANs and UniFi wireless — for high availability across sites
  • Identify problems and gaps yourself, scope them, and deliver the solutions largely on your own — with a strong bias to open-source and resourceful, cost-effective fixes
  • Maintain asset inventory and clear documentation; collaborate with other departments on their technology needs
What You’ll Grow Into

Our Systems Engineering team owns the mature platform side — infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Puppet), Prometheus monitoring, PCI-DSS compliance and more. You won't run that day to day, but you'll work closely with the team that does, get real insight into how it's built and operated, and have the runway to grow into it over time.

Technical Skills
What We’re Looking For
  • Demonstrated experience in a senior IT support / sysadmin role, comfortable owning escalations on your own
  • Comfortable supporting Windows, macOS and Linux
  • Solid networking — VLANs, firewalls, IPsec/VPNs, DNS, routing; OPNsense/pfSense and UniFi a strong plus (rule-based/CLI firewalls, not just cloud dashboards)
  • Google Workspace administration experience (GAM a plus); other SaaS/cloud (AWS) welcome
  • Hands-on experience with backups, virtualization and storage
  • Experience running monitoring/alerting and responding to incidents
  • Scripting and automation (Python/Bash) to make your own work repeatable — or genuine eagerness to learn
  • Solid grasp of cybersecurity principles
  • Strong diagnostic and root-cause skills on complex, cross-system issues — able to get to the bottom of things with no vendor and no one above you to escalate to
Soft Skills
  • Exceptional English communication — proficient at writing documentation and explaining difficult technical concepts to non-technical people
  • Genuinely enjoys customer-facing support and being the person people come to
  • Self-directed, resourceful and well-organized; able to prioritize a busy support queue and longer projects at the same time, without relying on heavy tooling or process
  • Strong collaboration skills across departments and time zones
