Job description

Optus is an Australian telecommunications company, delivering more than 11 million services to our customers every day across mobile, broadband and digital solutions.

We're looking for a hands-on Network Engineer to join our Field Operations team based in Blacktown and surrounds, where you'll play a critical role in keeping Australia's network infrastructure running. From service delivery and fault restoration to routine maintenance and facility management, you'll be the last line of defence for our customers — and a key contributor to a team that takes pride in getting things done right.

What You'll Do
  • Perform service delivery, assurance, and preventative and corrective maintenance across switching, transmission, and enhanced service platforms at exchange, CEV, FAN, hub, mobile, and customer sites.
  • Provide first-in technical facility support for critical infrastructure including UPS, DC power plant, HVAC, emergency generators, fire systems, and building management systems.
  • Respond rapidly to critical network incidents, working to restore services within SLA across consumer and enterprise customers.
  • Monitor and manage exchange and data centre environments, overseeing vendor and contractor activity to ensure compliance with Optus standards, safety requirements, and site cleanliness.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by refining operation manuals, work instructions, and methods of procedure, and supporting the development of new field engineers and cadets.
  • Provide ad hoc remote support to contractors and vendors, and assist with deploying and recovering portable generators and SatCat equipment during disaster response.
What makes you perfect for the role?
  • Comfortable working in a 24/7 operational environment, including shift work, on-call, and recall arrangements.
  • A technical qualification (Cert III, Cert IV, diploma, or degree) in Telecommunications Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent hands‑on experience — ideally with years in fixed transmission networks.
  • Solid understanding of transmission and digital systems, switching, HFC, mobile (including 5G/edge technology), and consumer products.
  • Demonstrated experience with critical infrastructure such as DC systems, rectifiers, UPS, PDUs, HVAC, chillers, fire panels, and grounding systems, with the ability to provide Tier 2 troubleshooting support.
  • Practical experience working in exchanges or data centres, including managing HVAC and power systems.
  • Ability to collaborate across teams on projects, MOPs, rack layout diagrams, and floor plans, with working knowledge of tools such as Office 365, ServiceNow, and Tableau.
The good stuff.
  • Competitive remuneration and employee discounts. Make life easier (and more affordable) with $80 monthly credit and 25% off Optus products and unique shopping discounts with our retail partners.
  • Competitive leave policies, including additional 'Connected' days to focus on culture, family, health, community, or whatever's important to you.
  • We support growing families with inclusive, carer‑neutral paid Parental Leave of up to 16 weeks.
  • Build meaningful connections through employee‑led networks and diversity initiatives including Culture Connect, Elevate Women, Disability Network and Express Yourself (LGBTQIA+).
  • Put your wellbeing first with free access to counselling and support services, 24/7 — in‑person, by phone, SMS, or video.

At Optus, we are strengthened by others and that means valuing diversity and saying 'yes' to embracing individual differences. We are committed to ensuring that our application process provides an equal employment opportunity to all job seekers, including individuals from diverse gender, cultural and linguistic backgrounds, individuals with a disability, individuals identifying as being part of the LGBTQIA+ community, individuals who may have served in the armed forces or who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
