Job summary

Amazon Support Services Pty Ltd in Melbourne seeks a Network Development Manager to lead a team of network engineers, own end-to-end operational health and drive continuous improvement for large-scale networks powering AWS services.

You will recruit, mentor and develop talent, manage capacity forecasting, automation, change control and customer-facing networking priorities to ensure reliable delivery at scale.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Experience with network operations either as a manager or individual contributor.
  • Experience in a network engineering role and network management role with responsibility for network operations.
  • Excellent understanding of networking technologies, network management tools and engineering practices.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the network, track and report on network status with key metrics.
  • Recruit and hire, oversee onboarding and training of new engineers.
  • Provide mentoring and 1:1s, manage 24x7 operations and rotations.
  • Ensure design, management and deployment operations are sound and scalable.
  • Manage network issues and availability risks and implement long-term solutions.
  • Use data, metrics and dashboards to optimize operations and processes.
  • Contribute to planning, roadmaps and cross-team collaboration.
  • Define and deliver team goals, allocate resources and report progress to leadership.

The AWS Networking team develops and operates the network platform for all of Amazon including e-commerce products and cloud computing solutions. This platform is industry-leading for its efficiency, throughput and reliability, and it is critical to the success of hundreds of thousands of AWS customers. We are looking for a Network Development Manager to join this team in our team, serving larges customers with unique requirements.

The AWS Networking team develops and operates the network platform for all of Amazon including e-commerce products and cloud computing solutions. This platform is industry-leading for its efficiency, throughput and reliability, and it is critical to the success of hundreds of thousands of AWS customers. We are looking for a Network Development Manager to join this team in our team, serving larges customers with unique requirements. As Network Development Manager, you will be hiring, managing and developing a team of network engineers and be responsible for end-to-end operational health of the network; including capacity management and forecast planning, implementation, automation, process management, change control and ensuring continuous improvement. You will represent networking to our customers and to the rest of the Networking team supporting the customer, ensuring we meet their needs for innovation, delivery and safe operations. They should maintain a good level of technical understanding and be able to ensure the right engineering expertise exists within the team. The ideal candidate will have an established background in managing similar teams, with a proven track record in driving operations and continuous improvement of large scale networks for mission critical workloads. You will have a passion for operational excellence and want to identify areas of improvement in our existing frameworks, tools, processes and documentation, striving to make them better. You will have a deep understanding of how to safely implement change, measure and analyse performance, and respond to events to ensure the network always operates as intended. In this role you will have the opportunity to leverage your technical knowledge with your management and people skills to build and develop a high performing team you are proud of that delivers an exceptional experience to our customers.

  • Operation of the network. Manage, track and report against operations and network status ensuring relevant metrics are collected and reported and driving operational excellence
  • Recruiting and hiring. Identify the hiring needs of the team and work with Amazon recruiting to evaluate candidates, participate in phone screens and interviews, and then ensure the new hires onboarding and training.
  • Performance management and team health. Provide both technical and soft skills mentoring, career and growth management, project management, quality audits, 1:1s, training, day-to-day oversight and coordination of an effective 24x7 operational rotation.
  • Ensure that design, management, implementation and deployment operations are sound and executed at scale, safely keeping AWS ahead of customers' demand.
  • Manage network issues and availability risks, ensuring they are addressed swiftly and long-term effective solutions are developed to address the route cause and avoid re-occurrence.
  • Manage operations and process optimization using relevant data, metrics and dashboarding techniques.
  • Continuously seek opportunities for growth and improvement and and define credible proposals and methods for implementation including contributing to AWS standard planning processes.
  • Develop, communicate, and maintain project road maps.
  • Seek opportunities to work with other engineering teams to improve synergies, understanding of best practices and create more opportunities for your engineers.
  • Own defining and delivering goals for the team, communicating objectives, aligning resources, effective management and reporting of progress and representing status to leadership.
  • Represent networking to the customer, service and infrastructure teams, to ensure that network dependencies and deliverables are identified and delivered as needed.
  • Ensure best practices from AWS are adopted, and compliance with company policies and security requirements.

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience coordinating between technical teams, peers and business stakeholders
  • Experience that includes strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities, or experience troubleshooting and debugging technical systems
  • Experience developing operational processes and technologies
  • A proven track record of success in delivering complex projects, including coordinating and driving issues to resolution autonomously utilizing excellent project management skills.
  • Experience managing on-call support coverage, and participation in escalation and critical issue management
