Job summary

Saab Australia is seeking a Navigation and Aviation Engineer to install, test, commission, and troubleshoot navigation and aviation systems within the Ship Combat Systems environment. The role focuses on meeting design, safety, and quality standards while engaging stakeholders to resolve complex system issues.

Key duties include system requirements analysis, test system reviews, and maintaining records in CM/FRACAS.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline (Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field etc.), and/or equivalent relevant experience (preferably within the defence industry).
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in Engineering activities prior to this role.
  • Past exposure in the Integration, Installation, Test and Evaluation of CS Systems into Naval Platforms or equivalent complex Military Systems having challenging constraints.
  • Significant experience and expertise in relevant technologies and domains with substantial professional experience as a Systems Engineer.
  • Extensive experience working in an engineering project multi-disciplinary environment (preferably within the defence industry).

Responsibilities

  • Install, test, commission, maintain, and troubleshoot Navigation and Aviation systems within the Ship Combat Systems environment.
  • Ensure equipment is installed to design documentation, commissioned, and tested to meet performance requirements.
  • Develop and manage system requirements analysis for test systems and participate in reviews.
  • Prepare Set to Work and Installation and Checkout procedures using defined design criteria.
  • Maintain test & integration records in Configuration Management (CM), including FRACAS logging.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to resolve production queries and manage design changes.
  • Support T&C activities with stakeholders and ensure timely delivery.

Job description

Saab Australia is an industry participant in the Combat Systems Integration – Integrated Project Team (CSI-IPT). The CSI-IPT forms a collaborative enterprise organisation to execute scopes of work across Hobart Class Destroyer (SEA4000 Phase 6 and other related Destroyer Capability Enhancement (DCE) upgrades) and the Hunter Class Frigates (HCFs - SEA5000 Phase 1).

The role

The Navigation and Aviation Engineer is responsible for the installation, testing, commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Navigation and Aviation systems within the Ship Combat Systems environment. The role ensures the equipment is successfully installed into the platform in accordance with Design Documentation, commissioned, and tested to ensure it meets operational and performance requirements, and is delivered in accordance with engineering, safety, and quality standards. The role requires strong technical problem-solving skills, stakeholder engagement, and the ability to manage complex navigation and aviation system issues to support the successful delivery of maritime combat capability.

Further, the successful candidate will:

Participate in the development and management of system requirements analysis in respect of test systems (i.e. test equipment, harnesses, & instrumentation systems).

Participate in requirements reviews for the product and the test systems.

Prepare Set to Work and Installation and Checkout procedures using design and qualification criteria defined by the system designer.

Ensure all test & integration records are maintained in Configuration Management (CM), including contributing to Verification Cross Reference Matrix (VCRM) and Requirements Traceability Matrix (RTM).

Utilise test tools effectively to undertake test, integration and verification including diagnosing problems and analysing results, capturing in the project Failure Reporting, Analysis, and Corrective Action System (FRACAS).

Work with relevant stakeholders to resolve production queries, including management of changes back into the design.

Work with stakeholders to negotiate support to T&C activities.

Flexible work arrangements such as hybrid work from home / office and a 9-day fortnight will be considered for this role.

About you

Your skills and experience will include:

Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline (Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field etc.), and/or equivalent relevant experience (preferably within the defence industry).

Minimum 4 years’ experience in Engineering activities prior to this role.

Extensive experience working in an engineering project multi-disciplinary environment (preferably within the defence industry).

Ability to manage multiple, concurrent activities, with tight deadlines, while understanding and managing priorities, dependencies and risks.

Practitioner’s level of experience in the fields of Systems Engineering (i.e. Requirements Management, System Architecture, Systems Integration, and/or Verification and Validation).
