Raytheon Australia seeks a Minor Vessel Naval Architect to support fleet sustainment for Offshore Patrol Vessels and Cape Class variants. You will engage Defence stakeholders, assess PIRs and URDEFs, and contribute to technical risk assessments.

The role provides growth through professional development and exposure to complex naval engineering challenges. You will work under the MV CLCM program, mentored by the Engineering Manager, with travel as needed and eligibility for security clearances.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in Naval Architecture.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in naval architecture or defence.
  • Experience in naval architecture analysis within heavy engineering/shipbuilding/defence.
  • Experience communicating with internal and external customers.
  • Experience conducting engineering investigations, analyses and reporting.
  • Ability to interpret drawings, specifications and maintain documentation.

Responsibilities

The Role As a Minor Vessel (MV) Naval Architect, you will work alongside Defence stakeholders to support fleet sustainment activities for Offshore Patrol Vessels and evolved Cape Class Patrol Boats. Your responsibilities will include stakeholder engagement, assisting with Problem Identification Reports (PIRs), conducting engineering assessments, supporting the resolution of Urgent Defects (URDEFs), and contributing to the development of technical risk assessments. This role also provides an excellent opportunity to learn, share knowledge, and further develop your understanding of Defence engineering methodologies, processes, and governance frameworks. You will be supported by the Engineering Manager and the broader Minor Vessel Capability Life‑Cycle Management (CLCM) team, who are committed to mentoring and professional development. Working as part of a collaborative and supportive team, you will help meet the needs of our customer, the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The role involves regular engagement with colleagues, Australian Defence Force personnel, capability partners, subcontractors, and suppliers to support the delivery of sustainment outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as the technical interface between the customer, management and the implementation team.
  • Provide engineering sustainment support for the Minor Vessel platforms during maintenance activities and in-service defects.
  • Review of engineering documentation such as docking calculations, stability calculations, structural calculations, work instructions, defect assessments, repair procedures, test procedures and engineering reports.
  • Engage with System Design activities (including trade studies) to ensure that the design artefacts are compatible with the baselined product; consistent across all subsystems, delivering system design to meet performance requirements.
  • Develop work scope and risk assessments for in-service defects, trials, emerging maintenance and reliability issues requiring knowledge of engineering fundamentals and the relevant class society requirements.
  • Produce safety and technical risk assessments in accordance with the Defence Seaworthiness Management System.

Key areas of knowledge include ship design, trim and stability, shock and vibration, dockings, hydrostatics and general structural engineering. Collaborating with internal and external stakeholder; securing Raytheon Australia’s reputation as a trusted partner in delivering systems integration and mission support solutions to our customers.

Skills, Experience and Qualifications
  • Tertiary Qualification in Naval Architecture as a minimum and professional development sufficient to attain recognition as CPEng with Engineers Australia in a relevant engineering stream, including ability to attain RPEQ recognition.
  • Minimum 5 years of prior relevant experience (when a University Degree is held).
  • Experience conducting Naval Architecture analysis within a heavy engineering, shipbuilding and/or defence industry.
  • Experience in effectively representing Engineering professional services to both internal and external customers.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting engineering investigations, technical analyses, and preparing engineering reports.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications, prepare technical documentation, and apply a high level of attention to detail.
  • Experience undertaking engineering integration activities and applying Systems Engineering principles, including requirements development, engineering design, design integration, verification, and validation.
  • Experience developing, reviewing, and maintaining engineering documentation, including technical drawings, CAD models, work instructions, test procedures, and engineering reports.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation, statutory regulations, classification society rule sets, and engineering governance frameworks.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with clients and stakeholders at all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, exercising initiative, sound judgement, critical thinking, and effective decision‑making skills.
  • Proven ability to achieve results and manage competing priorities in a dynamic and high‑pressure environment.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage, prioritise, and complete multiple tasks concurrently while meeting deadlines.
