About Us

At Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) we provide a range of public health services to the Riverina & Murray regions of New South Wales. Our Mental Health, Drug & Alcohol teams provide critical services within acute, sub-acute & community settings. We are known for our innovative models of care designed for the rural & regional population we serve.

What You Will Be Doing

Disability service works as a consultancy model. The Visiting Medical Officer provides clinical assessment and advice on management and treatment of patients with intellectual disability and psychiatric comorbidity in the Murrumbidgee District to assist the primary care providers and supports to deliver person centred care. The outpatient clinic is a combination of telehealth and in person clinics which is flexible.

As well as liaison with carers, NGOs and primary care providers, the role has an essential component of capacity building within the team and supporting the team’s outreach to other support services.

A significant component of the role is to provide education and management advice to local primary care providers and allied health staff who will be optimising the care of the patient. Knowledge of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, as well as familiarity with local services and NGOs will also be important in alleviating carer burden and providing a comprehensive package of care.

This care will be provided within the scope of practice granted by the LHD Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee.

This position is directly accountable to the Clinical District Director, Mental Health MLHD

Qualifications & Experience
  • Demonstrated significant experience in the assessment of those with intellectual disability
  • Experience working in rural settings and via telehealth is desirable
  • Evidence of a Medical qualification that is registerable with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health service colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing medical education relevant to area of practice and a willingness to commit to an equitable hospital on-call roster.
  • Willingness to teach medical students and other staff of the hospital when reasonably requested.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to clinical quality improvement and peer review, equal employment opportunity and Occupational Health Safety and Rehabilitation.
  • Evidence of a Fellowship of Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatry and proof of recognition as a specialist by the Specialists Recognition Advisory Committee.
