Job summary

Queensland Health's Pathology Queensland unit seeks a Medical Laboratory Scientist in Microbiology and Molecular to perform and interpret diagnostics, ensuring accurate results and clinical advice in a busy hospital setting.

You will work a rotating days/evenings roster across a 7-day period, contributing to QA programs and maintaining records while applying scientific judgement to patient specimens. The role offers opportunities for growth within SCHHS.

Qualifications

• Tertiary degree in medical laboratory science or equivalent.
• Ability to work rotating days/evenings.
• Proven ability to apply established principles to diagnostic testing and client-facing advice.

Responsibilities

• Perform specimen processing, microscopy, culture interpretation, identification and sensitivity testing and a range of diagnostic tests within the microbiology and molecular section.
• Participate in quality assurance activities including internal and external quality control programs.
• Maintain accurate records in relation to testing and all other laboratory activities.
• Perform analyser maintenance and troubleshooting and maintain consumable stocks.
• Apply scientific judgement in the analysis of patient specimens leading to verification and validation of test results and clinical advice as appropriate.
• Contribute to development of scientific practices, procedures and protocols within the diagnostic work area.
• Apply broad problem-solving skills to ensure continuity of service to meet SCHHS requirements.

Apply increasingly independent microbiology and molecular scientific judgement in the analysis of patient specimens leading to the verification and validation of test results and the provision of advice to the clinical unit where appropriate.The Medical Laboratory Scientist in Microbiology and Molecular reports to the Supervising Scientist Microbiology and Molecular.

What you'll do

• Perform specimen processing, microscopy, culture interpretation, identification and sensitivity testing and a range of diagnostic tests within the microbiology and molecular section.

• Apply scientific judgement in the analysis of patient specimens leading to the verification and validation of test results and the provision of advice to the clinical unit where appropriate to ensure that the microbiology and molecular services meet the requirements of the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS), commensurate with level of experience.
• Apply broad level of knowledge, skills, and experience and scientific leadership to microbiology and molecular team, commensurate with level of experience.
• Contribute to the development of scientific practices, procedures and protocols within the diagnostic work area.
• Apply broad problem-solving skills of clinical, scientific and logistical nature to ensure continuity of service to meet the requirements of the SCHHS.

About you

We are searching for someone who has:

• Demonstrated knowledge, expertise, and skill in the delivery of scientific/technical judgement within a microbiology and molecular laboratory.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as a member of a microbiology and molecular team.
• Demonstrated ability to apply established principles to a microbiology and molecular service with provision of results and clinical advice in a client focused manner.
• Demonstrated ability (or ability to rapidly acquire the skill) to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities in accordance with NATA/ISO accreditation/certification.

Qualifications, registrations and other requirements

• The successful applicant must hold at least a tertiary degree (or equivalent) formal qualification(s) in medical laboratory science or equivalent.
• The position advertised is shift and will be required to work days and evenings on a rotating roster over a 7 day period.
• Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/ manager, prior to the commencement of clinical duties
