Mechanical Procurement Lead Engineer Business Unit: Energy & Industrial Location: North Sydney Employment Type: Full Time

About the Role

UGL's Energy & Industrial business is seeking an experienced Mechanical Procurement Lead Engineer to lead the procurement and delivery of critical mechanical equipment and package procurement activities across major energy, renewables, industrial, resources, and infrastructure projects. Reporting to the Procurement Manager, this role is responsible for the strategic sourcing, procurement, expediting, and delivery of complex mechanical packages while providing leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance to a team of Mechanical Procurement Engineers. The successful candidate will ensure procurement activities are executed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with project objectives relating to cost, schedule, quality, and risk.

Key Responsibilities
  • Mechanical Package Procurement - Lead procurement activities for major mechanical equipment and packages, including:- Pumps - Compressors - Pressure vessels - Heat exchangers - Tanks - Piping packages - Valves - Rotating equipment - Bulk mechanical materials - Packaged skid systems - Develop and execute procurement strategies aligned with project delivery requirements.
  • Prepare and review sourcing plans, RFQs, bid evaluations, and procurement recommendations.
  • Manage supplier engagement, negotiations, and contract award processes.
  • Ensure compliance with project specifications, technical requirements, and procurement procedures.
  • Coordinate supplier clarifications and technical evaluations with engineering and project teams.
  • Monitor supplier performance, manufacturing progress, and delivery milestones.
  • Identify and mitigate commercial and supply chain risks.
  • Support project execution teams to ensure timely delivery of mechanical equipment and materials.
Team Leadership
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Mechanical Procurement Engineers.
  • Allocate workload and procurement packages across the team to meet project priorities.
  • Provide technical guidance on procurement strategies, supplier assessments, and package management.
  • Drive consistency and continuous improvement in procurement processes and practices.
  • Support capability development through coaching, training, and performance management.
  • Foster a collaborative and high-performing team culture.
Stakeholder Management
  • Act as the primary procurement focal point for mechanical packages across multiple projects.
  • Build strong relationships with Engineering, Construction, Project Management, Quality, Logistics, and Commercial teams.
  • Engage with suppliers and subcontractors to drive performance and resolve issues.
  • Provide regular procurement status updates to project and senior management teams.
Commercial & Risk Management
  • Support budget development and cost control initiatives.
  • Lead commercial negotiations to achieve best-value outcomes.
  • Manage procurement schedules and ensure alignment with project milestones.
  • Identify supply chain risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Review and manage procurement KPIs and performance metrics.
About You
Essential Requirements
  • - Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar engineering discipline.
  • - Significant experience in mechanical procurement within EPC, EPCM, energy, industrial, mining, oil & gas, renewables, or infrastructure projects.
  • - Demonstrated experience managing procurement of large mechanical equipment packages.
  • - Proven leadership experience managing or mentoring procurement engineering teams.
  • - Strong commercial acumen and supplier negotiation skills.
  • - Ability to review technical documentation, datasheets, specifications, and supplier proposals.
  • - Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • - Strong understanding of procurement lifecycle management and contract administration.
Desirable
  • - Experience working on major renewable energy, power generation, industrial, or resource sector projects.
  • - Knowledge of Australian and international mechanical equipment standards.
  • - Experience with ERP systems such as SAP.
  • - Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership.
  • - CIPS qualification or equivalent procurement certification.
