Job summary

Weir seeks a Mechanical Fitter for our Wingfield workshop team in Adelaide. This onsite role concentrates on pump maintenance, overhauls and rebuilds, with field support for shutdowns and travel to Whyalla and other mines as required.

You will apply precision measurement and machining skills in a heavy industry setting, maintaining safety and delivering high-quality mining solutions. Travel for shutdowns is expected, with accommodation provided.

Qualifications

  • Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade or equivalent Fitter/Fitter and Turner qualification.
  • Proven experience in heavy industry, mining, quarrying, crushing, conveying, or similar environments.
  • Competency in accurate mechanical measurement using micrometers and vernier calipers.
  • Strong safety focus and ability to perform physically demanding work safely.

Responsibilities

  • Workshop maintenance: pump stripping, inspection, measurement, rebuilding and assembly to OEM specs at Wingfield workshop.
  • Field service & shutdown support: periodic service and shutdowns, travel to Whyalla and other sites, night shifts possible.
  • Measurement & quality control: use micrometers and calipers to inspect components and support quality decisions.
  • Safety and physical capability: perform heavy mechanical work with a strong safety mindset.
  • Team collaboration: work in small crews and coordinate with workshop and broader business.
  • Travel readiness: willingness to travel to sites for shutdowns with accommodation and allowances.
  • Safety culture: uphold zero harm behaviors and contribute to a safe work environment.

We are looking for an experienced Fitter to join our close-knit workshop team, where you’ll play a key role in pump maintenance, overhauls and rebuilds. You’ll apply your technical skills in machining and precision measurement while supporting the delivery of high-quality solutions for the mining industry. Experience with Weir pumps and shutdown work will be highly regarded.

What you’ll do
  • Workshop Maintenance: Perform pump stripping, inspection, measurement, rebuilding, and assembly work to OEM specifications primarily at the Wingfield workshop.
  • Field Service & Shutdown Support: Provide periodic field service and shutdown support, mainly in Whyalla and other mine sites as required, including night shifts and travel.
  • Measurement & Quality Control: Use micrometers, vernier callipers, and other precision tools to inspect components, assess tolerances, and support quality decisions during pump rebuilds.
  • Physical & Safety Demands: Undertake physically demanding, heavy, and sometimes dirty mechanical work, especially during shutdowns, while maintaining strong safety awareness.
  • Team Collaboration: Work effectively in small crews, communicate clearly, and collaborate across the workshop and broader business to meet time-sensitive shutdown schedules.
  • Travel Requirements: Be comfortable traveling to Whyalla and other sites for shutdowns, including night shifts of 10 to 12 hours, with accommodation and allowances provided.

What you’ll bring
Must-haves
  • Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade or equivalent Fitter/Fitter and Turner qualification.
  • Proven experience in heavy industry, mining, quarrying, crushing, conveying, or similar industrial environments.
  • Competency in accurate mechanical measurement using micrometers, vernier callipers, and internal/external measuring techniques.
  • Strong safety focus with the ability to undertake physically demanding mechanical work safely.
Nice-to-haves
  • Experience with pump maintenance, stripping, or rebuilds, preferably with Weir pumps.
  • Previous mine-site or field-service exposure, including shutdown work.
  • Machining background or precision measurement experience.
