Job summary

Moffatt & Nichol is seeking a Maritime Structural Engineer to join either the Brisbane or Sydney office. The role involves structural design of waterfront facilities for cargo, naval, passenger and recreational vessels, leading workstreams and coordinating deliverables with junior engineers.

Qualifications include a Civil/Structural Engineering degree with 5+ years’ maritime design experience, Chartered Engineer status or progression, and familiarity with Australian design codes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (Washington Accord degree preferred).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in structural engineering design, predominantly maritime structures.
  • Chartered Professional Engineer (Engineers Australia) - achieved or progressing, or willingness to commence.
  • General Construction Induction Card (White Card).
  • Experience designing to Australian design codes (AS 1170, AS 2159, AS 3600, AS 4100, AS 4678, AS 4997).
  • Pre-employment background check per NIST 800-171.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical workstreams and coordinate deliverables.
  • Undertake structural design of waterfront and urban waterfront projects (near-shore platforms, wharves, piers, docks, terminals).
  • Develop design criteria and calculate maritime design loads.
  • Produce construction drawings and structural calculation packages.
  • Communicate with clients and external stakeholders.

We are actively looking for a Maritime Structural Engineer to join our Sydney or Brisbane office. As part of the Maritime Structural Group, the Maritime Structural Engineer will create structural design of waterfront structures and maritime infrastructure projects, including facilities for cargo, naval, passenger and recreational vessels, work with junior engineers on the design of maritime structures and develop and maintain positive client relationships during project delivery.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Apply sound engineering judgement to solve moderately complex to complex problems
  • Deliver engineering work packages or project components
  • Lead technical workstreams and coordinate deliverables
  • Provide technical oversight and quality review of deliverables
  • Undertake structural design of waterfront and urban waterfront projects relating to near-shore platforms, trestles, wharves, piers, docks, bulkheads, gravity retaining structures, mooring/breasting structures, and liquid, gas, container and bulk terminals. Work independently on smaller design projects and in a team including junior engineers
  • Develop design criteria (basis of design) for maritime facilities and calculate design loads that are specific to maritime structures
  • Structural analysis, design, and detailing for concrete, steel and timber structures
  • Resolve design problems that may include performing field investigation or inspection
  • Develop construction drawings (in conjunction with CAD/BIM technicians) and structural calculation packages
  • Prepare technical reports
  • Inspection, authoring assessment reports and developing rehabilitation plans of waterfront structures with assistance from senior engineers
  • Works closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects
  • Communicate with clients and external stakeholders

Working conditions:

Majority of work is office based. Some site visits may be required which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment.
