Job description

Manufacturing Engineer, Electromechanical Systems
Full-time | Manufacturing | Mid level
Location: South East Queensland (on-site, between Brisbane and the Gold Coast)
Reporting to: VP of Manufacturing
Clearance: Must hold or be able to obtain NV1
About our client

Our client is a venture-backed Australian defence technology company building AI-powered sensing systems that help autonomous platforms see, understand and act in complex, contested environments. Their technology is already deployed across defence and national security applications in the U.S. and allied markets.

Backed by a group of leading Australian and international investors, the business is entering a major growth phase. It is a small, fast-moving team with the energy of a start-up and the technical credibility of a serious defence technology provider.

They work at the intersection of optics, autonomy, robotics and real-time AI, and they deploy what they build. If you want to ship technology that matters, this is the place.

About the role

Our client is looking for a Manufacturing Engineer to design, build and continuously improve the manufacturing processes behind their autonomous optical search systems. You will take complex electromechanical and electronic hardware products from prototype through to low-rate and full-scale production, working closely with electrical, mechanical, systems engineering, quality and supply chain teams to make sure everything built is repeatable, reliable and compliant with Defence standards.

This is a hands-on role for an engineer who can bridge engineering design and production, with experience supporting the manufacture, integration, testing and validation of products containing electrical, electronic and mechanical subsystems.

What you will do
  • Design, implement and continuously improve manufacturing and assembly processes for complex electromechanical and electronic products.
  • Work with electrical, mechanical and systems engineers during product development so designs are optimised for manufacturability, assembly, reliability and cost (DFM/DFMA).
  • Support integration and production of electrical hardware including electronic assemblies, sensors, actuators, wiring/cabling and associated test systems.
  • Develop and maintain work instructions, assembly procedures, manufacturing routings and technical documentation.
  • Drive the transition from prototype through low-rate and full-scale production, building repeatable, scalable processes.
  • Establish in-process quality controls, inspection criteria, acceptance test procedures and corrective action processes.
  • Lead root cause investigations into manufacturing non-conformances and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Design, specify and validate assembly fixtures, production tooling and test equipment for mechanical and electrical assemblies.
  • Support production testing, system integration and acceptance testing of electromechanical assemblies.
  • Work with suppliers and procurement to qualify components, resolve manufacturing issues and improve product quality.
  • Support Engineering Change Requests (ECRs), Bills of Materials (BOMs), configuration management and product lifecycle documentation.
  • Monitor production yield, quality and cycle times, driving Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement.
  • Make sure manufacturing records, processes and product traceability meet Defence, quality and regulatory requirements.
What you bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics or Mechanical Engineering (essential).
  • Experience developing manufacturing processes for complex electromechanical products containing electrical/electronic systems.
  • Practical understanding of electrical hardware integration: electronic assemblies/PCBAs, wiring harnesses and cabling, sensors, actuators and instrumentation, and electrical test and verification.
  • Solid grasp of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA).
  • Experience creating and managing BOMs, manufacturing routings and engineering change processes.
  • Experience supporting prototype builds, product integration, production ramp-up and new product introduction (NPI).
  • Hands-on with test equipment, production testing, assembly tooling, jigs and fixtures.
  • Knowledge of Lean, Six Sigma, 5S and continuous improvement methods.
  • Root cause analysis experience such as 8D, Fishbone and Fault Tree Analysis.
  • Familiarity with quality management systems and manufacturing documentation requirements.
  • Strong troubleshooting across integrated electrical, electronic and mechanical systems.
  • Organised and detail-focused on documentation, configuration control and compliance.
  • Clear communicator, comfortable working across engineering, quality, manufacturing and supplier teams.
  • Comfortable in a fast-moving environment, with willingness to travel domestically as needed.
  • Able to hold or obtain an NV1 security clearance.
Highly regarded: experience in Defence, Aerospace, Space, Medical Devices, Robotics or Advanced Manufacturing, and ERP/MRP and PLM tools.
Why this role
  • Hard deep-tech problems: optics, autonomy, real-time AI and hardware-software integration in one product. Very little distance between what you build and where it ends up.
  • Work alongside leaders with decades of combined experience in AI, optics and defence.
  • A close-knit, low-ego team where ideas win on merit, not seniority. Low politics, high trust.
  • High expectations and fast growth, faster than you would get at a large organisation.
  • Technology already deployed in real environments, protecting lives and strengthening national security.
