About the opportunity

Stellar Recruitment is partnering with South32 to recruit a Manager Health, Safety, Environment, Risk & Training for Cannington Mine in northwest Queensland.

Reporting directly to the Vice President Operations, you will lead the site’s health and hygiene, safety, material risk, environment, training, emergency response and compliance functions. You will lead an established multidisciplinary team of approximately 21 people and serve as a key member of Cannington’s senior leadership team.

The technical foundations are established. The opportunity is to provide clear direction, strengthen leadership capability and accountability, and ensure priority programs of work are implemented effectively and sustained. Success will require a leader who can establish expectations, constructively challenge missed commitments, simplify priorities and consistently translate plans into operational outcomes.

This is a visible operational leadership role. You will work closely with leaders across the mine to strengthen ownership of health, safety, material risk, environment and workforce competency within the line organisation.

Key responsibilities
  • Lead, coach and develop the HSERT leadership team, creating a culture of care, accountability, constructive challenge and consistent delivery.
  • Set a clear strategic direction and focused annual operating plan across health and hygiene, safety, material risk, environment and training.
  • Translate strategy, assurance findings and improvement priorities into executable programs with clear accountabilities, milestones and measures of success.
  • Establish disciplined governance and follow-through, ensuring critical actions and commitments are completed to the required standard and timeframe.
  • Influence, coach and constructively challenge senior operational leaders to strengthen line ownership of safety, risk and workforce capability.
  • Provide visible field leadership and help leaders improve the quality of critical control management, operational routines and risk-based decision-making.
  • Strengthen material risk management, critical control verification, hazard identification, incident management and significant-event investigation.
  • Lead change across the HSERT function, including simplifying systems and redirecting specialist effort toward the activities that most effectively reduce risk and improve operational performance.
  • Oversee regulatory compliance, environmental approvals and reporting across the mine and associated rail and port activities.
  • Provide strategic leadership across health and hygiene, injury management, workers compensation, emergency response and training systems.
  • Build trusted, transparent relationships with operational leaders, corporate functions, contractors, regulators and external service providers.
  • Manage the function’s budget, performance reporting and improvement portfolio, connecting technical requirements with practical operational and commercial decisions.
About you

You are an experienced mining or heavy-industry leader who combines credible HSERT judgement with strong people leadership, operational influence and disciplined execution.

The strongest candidates will demonstrate:

  • Leadership of complex teams: At least five years’ experience leading a multidisciplinary team of 10 or more people, including senior technical or functional leaders.
  • Delivery and change leadership: A strong record of implementing significant change and delivering complex programs of work through clear priorities, effective governance and sustained follow-through.
  • Accountability and performance: Demonstrated ability to establish clear expectations, address missed commitments and improve team performance while maintaining trust and engagement.
  • Operational influence: The credibility and confidence to coach, influence and constructively challenge senior operational leaders, contractors, technical specialists and frontline teams.
  • Material risk leadership: Sound operational understanding of material risk, critical controls, significant-event management, regulatory compliance and management-system effectiveness.
  • Breadth across the HSERT portfolio: Sufficient exposure to environment, health and hygiene, emergency response and training to lead specialist expertise and make balanced, risk-based decisions.
  • Commercial judgement: Experience managing budgets and prioritising technical requirements, risk-reduction initiatives and business needs in a resource-constrained operational environment.
  • Communication and stakeholder leadership: Advanced communication, facilitation and influencing capability, including engagement with executives, regulators and workforce representatives.
  • Relevant qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, safety or a related discipline. Postgraduate qualifications in work health and safety will be highly regarded.
  • Roster flexibility: The ability to work a 4 days on, 3 days off roster and occasionally participate in an 8 days on, 6 days off duty-manager swing.
