Job summary

Lightsource bp in Melbourne seeks a Senior Spot Trader to join the APAC Energy Markets team. You will oversee BESS trading algorithms, optimise short-term positions in the NEM, and help shape trading strategies for portfolio optimisation and risk management.

The role requires 2+ years in spot electricity markets, plus experience with the NEM and BESS trading. Collaboration with analytics and portfolio teams is essential, with a focus on market-driven decision making.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years' experience in spot electricity markets.
• Experience in the NEM and familiarity with AEMO MMS.
• Experience with trading BESS in the spot market and/or complex position management.
• Understanding of risk management principles and how they affect trading decisions.

Responsibilities

• Supervision of BESS trading algorithms and short term position optimisation in the NEM.
• Adjust trading strategies in response to short-term market changes.
• Providing analytical support to develop, implement and improve trading strategies across energy arbitrage, FCAS and contract positions.
• Assist the Portfolio Optimisation Manager with reporting and stakeholder management as required.
• Monitor market trends, conditions, price outlook and regulatory changes and evaluate these impacts on Lightsource bp’s asset portfolio.
• Work with the analytics team to build, maintain and refine trading tools, reports and contribute to development of predictive commercial models.
• Support the commissioning activities for new BESS and Hybridised assets coming on line.

What you’ll do (the role)

Summary

The APAC Energy Markets team plays a critical role in securing revenue streams to drive value and manage market risk for Lightsource bp’s APAC renewable electricity generation and storage portfolio.

The Senior Spot Trader is an integral member of the APAC Power Markets team to support the optimisation activities for the storage and hybrid assets in the portfolio. The Trader will be responsible for short-term BESS optimisation, engagement and co-ordination with third party optimiser providers and contributing to the development and execution of trading strategies for portfolio optimisation in the NEM.

The role also carries responsibility for reporting on portfolio performance, supporting the Portfolio Optimisation Manager with managing and overseeing BESS activities, trading analytics, contract management and BESS commissioning activities.

In your day-to-day role you will be responsible for the oversight, and interventions as necessary, of automated trading algorithms, whilst concurrently performing analytical research and working on trading strategy development to enhance algorithmic performance and broader portfolio optimisation and commercial outcomes.

• Experience in the NEM and familiarity with AEMO MMS
• Experience with trading BESS in the spot market and/or complex position management highly desirable
• Understanding of risk management principles and how they affect trading decisions

Skills Required

• Knowledge of the market dynamics affecting short-term and long-term price projections in the NEM.
• High analytical capability
• Proficiency in SQL, Python beneficial

Education Required

• Degree in a numerical field (Mathematics, Engineering, Economics, or related)

• Occasional interstate travelmay be required depending on candidate’s main location.
