Description

Chosen Family fosters a community-centric ecosystem that embraces diversity, flexibility, and enrichment for all. We continuously reimagine how our services can create platforms for equality, inclusion, and belonging. Committed to a culture of acceptance, we ensure that everyone is welcomed and valued.

Recognising the interconnectedness of our humanity, we strive to empower individuals to live independently. By honouring each person’s unique identity and experiences, we celebrate and uplift one another in return.

What We Are Looking For

We are seeking a friendly, outgoing, conversational, and motivating Disability Support Worker to support a male participant based in Tregear, NSW, with community access.

We are particularly interested in Support Worker applicants whose first language is English, with strong conversational skills and the confidence to build rapport through natural, engaging communication.

A male Support Worker is strongly preferred, ideally someone aged 25-45 who is outgoing, approachable, positive, and confident engaging in community activities.

The participant would benefit from someone who enjoys conversation, brings positive energy, and encourages participation in meaningful community experiences. The ideal worker will be comfortable initiating and maintaining conversations, offering encouragement, and supporting the participant to explore activities at his own pace.

We are looking for someone who is naturally social, talkative, energetic, and motivating while remaining respectful of the participant’s individual preferences, choices, and independence.

Participant: Male participant with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Support Type: Community Access

Schedule: Mondays, 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Initial Hours: 3 hours per week

Future Opportunities: Potential for additional hours as the support arrangement develops.

Responsibilities of the Role
  • Support the participant to access and participate in community activities.
  • Encourage involvement in meaningful and enjoyable activities based on his interests.
  • Facilitate natural conversation, positive social interaction, and community engagement.
  • Provide transportation to community activities as required.
  • Support the participant to develop confidence, independence, and social connections.
  • Offer positive encouragement and motivation without being overly directive.
  • Build a trusting, respectful, and consistent support relationship.
  • Communicate clearly and confidently in English.
  • Respect the participant’s choices, preferences, and independence.
  • Complete accurate progress notes and required support documentation.
  • Communicate relevant observations or concerns to the appropriate Chosen Family team members.

Applicants must have:

  • A valid Australian Driver’s Licence.
  • Access to a reliable vehicle suitable for community access.
  • Willingness and ability to drive the participant to community activities as required.
  • Strong English communication and conversational skills.
  • Availability and reliability for the agreed Monday schedule.
  • A genuine interest in community access and supporting people with disability.

Preference: Applicants whose first language is English, particularly those who are confident initiating conversations, explaining information clearly, and building rapport through everyday social interaction.

About the Ideal Support Worker

Our preferred candidate will be:

  • Male, as strongly preferred for this support arrangement.
  • Ideally aged 25-45.
  • A first-language English speaker with strong conversational abilities.
  • Friendly, approachable, outgoing, and talkative.
  • Positive, energetic, encouraging, and motivating.
  • Comfortable supporting a person with Autism (ASD).
  • Confident engaging in community activities and social conversations.
  • Reliable, punctual, and consistent.
  • Able to establish rapport and develop a positive working relationship.
  • Respectful of the participant’s autonomy, choices, and individual preferences.
  • Comfortable driving as part of community access support.
About the Support Arrangement

The participant will initially receive one three-hour community access shift every Monday, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

This is an opportunity for a Support Worker to establish a consistent and positive working relationship with the participant. If the arrangement works well for both parties, additional support hours may become available.

We are looking for someone who is genuinely interested in building rapport and encouraging meaningful participation—not simply filling a rostered shift.

What Success Looks Like

The successful Support Worker will help the participant:

  • Access and enjoy activities within the community.
  • Participate in meaningful experiences aligned with his interests.
  • Build confidence in community settings.
  • Develop greater independence and social engagement.
  • Enjoy natural, comfortable, and positive conversations.
  • Establish a trusting relationship with a reliable and encouraging support person.

Effective support is not about deciding what someone should do. It is about working alongside the person, encouraging participation, respecting their choices, and creating opportunities to build confidence and independence.

Chosen Family welcomes diversity and inclusion. We strongly encourage applications from people with disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, and LGBTQIA+ people. We value lived experience, individual strengths, and the unique perspectives each person brings to our team.
